I agree about cutting/breaking off the ground. Being an electrical engineer it just goes against my principals to do that.

I've got some great white legs that will have to stay that way. Not much chance of a tan in the winter. Got a few pairs of shorts... First trip there I brought a few pairs of long pants (jeans) and a lot of socks. Never used them. Luckily I was planning some beach time and scuba diving so I had shorts and sandals.
I am surprised that I thought that the voltage was 110 after having been there two times, but I didn't bring anything that needed to be plugged in on that trip so I guess I just didn't notice... I'm pretty good at that.
Here's another question, unrelated to the topic. I am planning on checking out some of the rental properties I saw on the Island Properties web site. If anyone is familiar with them, would you recommend them?

Thanks again for all the help. Seems like the more I find out the more questions I have.

While it seems easy to just look for a place online, both of the two houses I have rented in dumaguete were found offline. The fist house we found by renting a trike and driver to drive us around for awhile. The sign was on a tree and we scored the 2 bedroom house for 8,000 per month. The second one was offered up to us by our suki trike driver. You can find a suitable place fairly quickly here by driving around with a trike driver. I can set you up with my suki when you get here. He will drive you all over the place on the cheap and take good care of you. He has been working for us for 2 years now. When we need him we text and he shows up.

As you already raised the internet issue, when you are out looking at places pay attention to towers around the homes you are looking at. If you see 2 inch poles with an antenna that is flat faced and 3 by 12 inches (to the best of my recollection) then smart bro is available. If you see 4 inch pipes such as this one with a box the size of a toaster on it and a yaggi antenna, internet might be a problem. Keep on trucking! The best possible scenario would be sky cable, globe DSL, or Smartbro wireless which the landlord should know. If they say they don't know who services the area then you need to go to town and talk to the 3 companies I mentioned.

.....and wherever you go, bring a laptop and do a speed test, either wirelessly or borrow someones connection temporarily. This will let you know if it is even possible to do what you want/need to do speed wise.

The "up to" figures that all the local companies quote rarely if ever happen.

Heck, if somewhere local to Dumaguete could provide me with a consistent 1MB up and download speed I could do the job I'm doing here in CA there! My current boss already has said he doesn't care where I work from, either at home or the office. He's even OK with me working in the Philippines! :D Where is the "fast" internet around Duma though??

Post your local speed test results! :D

Unfortunately, you hail from Bacong when here so chances are slim. If you were to have an office in Dumaguete then you could get that speed you want.

I have been trying to talk another ex-pat into sharing an office with a good connection. If we had 5 guys get together and rent an office with a fat connection then it would be economically feasible. We could hire a receptionist to field VOIP calls from abroad install a PABX system with 16 extensions, put some desks in there and have a nice place to work.

    continued.. (afterthought)

I already have a corporation that could use a nice home and would like to move my PLDT connection to Dumaguete in the city since I can't get PLDT DSL in my barangay, but it is available around Lee Plaza

Just checked my local connection speed. I'm getting 9.98mb/s down and .98mb/s up. I'm guessing I'd need to combine 2 ISP's to get that in Dumaguete.

Thanks for the info Jowmambi, and I checked the pics of the lights going on the pole... brave girl!
    I'll PM you later...

    Gary
