Welcome to the Philippines Food Quandry

What you have described Veronica could apply to many of the restaurants in Dumaguete. As an example, many folks here rave about "Casblanca" and browbeat "Why Not" but I have personally experienced the worst food service from Casblanca on 2 separate occasions. On both occasions someones food was not served until at least 15 to 30 minutes after everyone elses. On the other hand Why Not serves food at the same time and is fairly consistent and will be around long after Casablanca has folded tent. But the shame of this is the food at Casablanca is far superior to Why Not but it may not matter becasue many people I know will never eat there again due to their lousy service both back and front of house!!!
Moon over on Robinson has mexican and might meet your vegetarian requirements to some extent. However, the bottom line is food service in this country is terrible and food quality often is not much better. You experienced both at Persian Palate. Maybe one day people here will take more pride in their work and hopefully start earning a decent wage for their work. One is not mutually exclusive to the other.
Hey I hear the diving is good in India hahahah lots of vegan food there.

In my opinion, Why Not's tenderloin steak in pepper creme sauce is the best steak in town.

It's pretty darn good, and I'm a picky eater.

Trust me, I've had real Texan food a lot. My parents live 6 months of the year in Texas and whenever I'd visit them and we'd go to road houses and get steak, ribs, barbecue whatever we'd eat a ton and then feel like rocks after. I'd gain a lot of weight in a few weeks, sleep all the time, and be cranky and feel depressed. Texas junk food is why I gave up meat and refused to let unhealthy food make me feel tired and fat the rest of my life.

Sorry I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything, or why some people who love meat like to feel threatened that I don't and rub it in my face. It doesn't bother me when other people gain weight like crazy or get tired and sick.

But since my mom and step dad have been eating Texan food over the past 10 years they went from slim and healthy to round and fat like everyone else in Texas and put themselves at risk for heart disease, cancer and diabetes. And this is only eating the junk food (roadhouse/steakhouse food) some of the time, not 3 meals a day every day like a lot of people.

My husband and I run a health info company and are vegan by choice for health reasons, so you're not going to make me feel bad regardless of how much you love meat, no one is threatening you or asking you to change, I was just asking where to get some vegan food around here from some locals.

I found some myself thanks. But thanks for going out of your way to try and rub your love of meat in my face. Obviously you wanted some kind of reaction. Most people I know eat meat, and I don't care what they eat, it's not my problem.

LOL Thanks Shaboo. We like to not limit ourselves to places based on diet, we'd rather experience the world and do our best to stay healthy while traveling where we want and then get back on track when we get home.

I can understand it's hard for the Philippines being divided into thousands of islands to have fresh food and good quality because so much must come by plane or boat and with poor infrastructure it can be very inefficient. I have no doubt the situation would be better if they weren't all islands. Most people on islands in modern society have terrible diets, like the Polynesians and Hawaiians as well, it's a lot of rice, bread and meat and no vegetables and little fruit.

    vegetarian

The word "vegetarian, like many other words conveys little meaning because many of its meanings are much different from others of its meanings. Many restaurants have prepared "vegetarian" meals for me, but none have prepared meals such as I wanted.

Is Roberto's (known as Rosante) on Perdices street the one on the second floor of a hotel? If so I would like to ask a few questions to which I might have have come up with answers myself but for the underlying situation in the first question: On two dinner times, I found no customers in the restaurant and did not enter it; why does it have evenings with no business? What sort of food does it serve (an indication was posted in the hall) especially as to quality characteristics?

great food is available for only some vegans

Hi Veronica, Perhaps you would do well to visit one of the several markets around the area. This area is a good place for fruitarians. But for other vegans ah, sorry, *NO*.

    restaurants

Owner of P. P. claims to provide "health food"; but that term seems to mean something much different from what it means to North Americans. Yet it is pretty much vegetarian, but not at all vegan.

Jutsz Cafe is going through changes so I am not confident as to what to expect of a meal there. Accordingly your comment is good to read.

    rice

Seems that rice grown in a factory is provided by nearly all eateries. Very hungrey people often will not eat it unless it is covered with some other ingestant.:smile:

    Rome

Hey Jack you know of any Romes where the people complain about being poor and about being mistreated by their government until they die 9 or 10 years earlier than do the largest group of "d*mn foreigners" they encounter? Maybe they are fine places in which we might live and accept without trying to find the best they offer.
