Yesterday, my mother-in-law had a piece of paper declscribing a screen protector that goes over the tv set to keep "harmful radiation" from coming out.
I went on Google and showed the family that since Jan. 15, 1970, every tv set has no measureable harmful radiation emitted. I read it to them and then let them read it for themselves.
Today the salesman came by and installed the new radiation filter (stick-on plastic cover) for 1900 pesos.
Some things you (we) cannot convience the locals about new modern technology.
Yes, and her mother (and her) still cover all mirrors during a thunder storm so that the mirrors won't attract lightning.
And yes, we do have a bolo knife, bamboo spears and special oil hung in our bedroom to keep away the aswang.
I give up......... I really love it here, but some things are so frustrating.

You have to understand the environment and the gene pool. It's a different culture with a lot of ingrained customs and superstitions, but 1900P for a screen protector? I hope it wasn't your money!

KDF -no, it was NOT my money thank goodness.

But I was so frustrated when I wrote that thread, that I forgot the "punch line".
They ALREADY had one on the tv that was about 6 years old, but the salesman told them that the "radiation wears them out" so they needed to replace it.

    Will I ever completely adjust?????

    LOL.

Hey, I have invented some automatic lightning sensing blinds for mirrors, only P5000 per square meter!

Shadow - you think that you're making a joke, but trust me, if they were available, people here would buy them I'm sure. While you're inventing things, let's all of us get together and invent a "aswang alarm" also.

JP -you are absolutely right. Without local traditions, customs and the driving habits here, not forgetting "lip pointing", we would all be bored to death.

God, I love this (frustrating) place.

One of my neighbors in Bacong had a fishing line with huge hooks hanging up high across the front of their property with bells and noise makers tied to it as an aswang alarm. Those aswangs must sure be tall though as the lowest fish hook was a good 8 feet up in the air! :D
