On January 7, 2010, one year ago, after a 33 hour and 10 minute trip, I stepped off of an airplane at Lumbia Airport in Cagayan De Oro, and into the waiting arms of the lady that I would marry 48 days later on February 24, 2010.
Normally, too stupid to be afraid of anything, that day I was so very scared of my future.
It has been the most wonderful year of my life thanks to my darling Rudy Mae (Mae-Mae) and her family.
And with their help, and the help of my friends here at this site, I have adjusted to life here (as much as possible).
And the neighbors and friends here have stopped calling me the "foreigner" and started calling me "Ron".
    Life is good.......................

Ron, a very heart warming story, thanks for sharing. I had dinner with an American friend of mine Tuesday who told me his nightmare depressing story. He had a gf in Bacolad, traveled here a few times a year to see her, fell in love, she got pregnant, he sent her lots of money, paid for the birth at a good hospital, came back to see her and the baby last week, and found out the baby was not his. My friend was so depressed and I felt so bad for him. So you and I and many of the great friends I have met here who are happy and in love are the lucky ones. As my friend and I discussed, you hear about stories like his all the time but when you are the victim it hurts badly. So my friend, I enjoyed hearing your happiness. Hope you can make it over here soon. Best regards

I've seen numerous figures on success/failure rate of what we have done and most of them are 90% or higher for a failure.
Luck? Trying harder? I don't know what it takes to be successful in a relationship/marriage here.
I know that for one of the rare times in my life, I was afraid and expected failure. Maybe just because of the "horror stories".
I joke a lot about it now, but I remember almost nothing of my trip here. Only bits and pieces. The fear took over for that 33 hours. And yet prior to that I can remember every minute of every flight I ever took all over the world.
I prefer to call myself very lucky to have found an honest and loving wife here and I make sure to tell her many times a day.
The relationships that work, are the best in the world.
