⌛ Philippine smoking laws.

Hello to all. I just want to tell my experiences when it comes to public smoking in Dumaguete. I have
several times been exposed to heavy smoke crimes in and around the city. In places like Why Not, Anabelles, and specially Coco Amigo bar. Many times i have told smokers to butt out. But no help. Of course I have reported this crimes at the police station. But nothing seems to help.
I wish the police here would be as strict and resourceful as our beloved Sigarette Service (SS) police back at home. In Norway we got the SS arresting and putting away smokers every day. Smoking will lead to up to 20 years in prison. People of Oslo etc. are encouraged to report on smoking neighbors. Special smoke and heat detecting planes control the airspace over Oslo. Is this a joke? If you dont belive me just check this short documentary about smoke criminals in Norway. Good luck, have a smokeless day.

SS?? Wasn't that part of the Nazi regime? Forget about smoking. Let's get some TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT....

 

PHILIPPINES IS A FREE COUNTRY, and smoking is aloud most everywhere. I love my cigar and cigarettes.....and a couple of drinks.

Where do you read that smoking is a crime in Philippines?????

You are a guest in this country and have to accept the way it is here. If you as a foreigner try to change this country,the laws and rules, nobody will ever listen to you. So my advice is, if you don't like the way it is here live the rest of your life in Norway. Buy a one way ticket and live happily thereafter in SS country!

The Philippines has a law that prohibits smoking in public places, The Clean Air Act of 1999-Republic act Nr 8749.
But you will hardly find someone in Manila who is aware of it, even more in Dumaguete.
It is all part of the worldwide climategate after Kyoto,Kopenhagen and recently Cancun.

 

Law enforcement in the Philippines not exactly what you're accustomed to? Of all the crimes that occur here cigarette smoking should be very low on the list.
It's not that I like cigarette smoking. Frankly I think it's stupid, annoying and most smokers are terribly inconsiderate of others, however, if you're looking for the police to do something you'll be waiting a long, long time.
The Clean Air Act is like a lot of other laws that get passed. It all looks good on paper but there's no way it's ever going to be enforced. You're worried about cigarettes? I'm more concerned about the smoke belching buses, jeepneys, tricycles and cars. In any city of size here everything is covered with soot, including our lungs.
Still, I have to agree with Ron. If you choose to smoke cigarettes or cigars or anything else that's your choice as far as I'm concerned, however, I would love it if people exercised more consideration of others (as a matter of politeness).

 

Davao has strict anti-smoking laws and is a wonderfully functioning city due to its excellent mayor and Vice Mayor.. Daumaguete has no laws about anything it seems and is a joke in this and many, many, many other aspects. A great town screwed up by management incompetence. Neverthless it has many other thingss that make life here so desirable if only the government can get its act together and deal with smoking, traffic, getting buses and trucks off the blvd, fixing the roads faster.

 

The anti-smoking law was only in response to the World Health Organization dangling money to the Philippines. A lot of laws in this country are the result of other countries bribing with grants and zero interest loans.

I am a smoker, but one with manners. I do not smoke in my own house, I do not smoke around my kids, I do not smoke at a restaurant unless in the smoking area and even then I do not smoke if someone at our table is eating. Even as an emitter of noxious fumes, I do not like someone smoking next to me when I am eating either.

If I am traveling alone, however I might just do something daring like relieve myself while sitting on the toilet while smoking a cigarette in the privacy of my hotel room. A particularly enjoyable ritual that nonsmokers will never know of! Even better if accompanied by a cup of coffee!

Draconian smoking laws are bad for business and bad for personal rights of smokers. For the nonsmokers that do not agree, consider smoking as just one right that when taken away can lead to other rights being taken away.

Once they start taking, they keep on taking and soon places like Davis California pass ordinances that you cannot sell bottled water in their town due to plastic waste. You can bring your own authorized refillable container and fill it at a city sponsored drinking fountain if you wish.

 

Hi again: Davao you say? Seems like a nice city. They got a mayor that really cares. Great, have never been there, will visit there this year for sure. Almost to good to be true.
Also I have seen Mayor Bloomberg of New York City, he does a heroic struggle to forbid smoking even in outside public places in NY. As we all know, smokers are different, they are constructed in a special way. Found this Youtube video that explain this very clearly.Take a look---

Davao Rocks

Davao is not just great it is awesome. Best run city in the country. Has almost everyting you could ask for as a foreigner. Many live there. Only think missing is the intimacy you get with Dumaguete and the distance needed to travel there can be great depending on where you live. I might suggest Red Knight Gardens Red Knight Gardens Hotel : Davao City, Philippines

 

I agree with you in regards to Davao..... My wife born and raised there. Been there many, many times and often we stayed at Paradise Island Resort on Samal Island, only 10 minutes by boat from Davao. Davao has all you can ask for... including the best quality food in Phil both from the Market and Restaurants. Great choice to live there and YES, I do love the Mayor of Davao. What a guy,he gets the job done on time. Safest city to live in Philippines. Great expat community with lots of activities. I already know that we will end up there soon!
