When we were in the Phillippines 20 years ago, we had furniture built. Is that still necessary or are there local furniture stores. If there are furniture stores is the furniture of good quality? Also about clothing is it availble off the rack for xxl sizes? Years ago it was best to hire a tailor.

Yes, there are stores offering furniture. We have lived in furnished (or semi-furnished) housing since we arrived, so we have not had to purchase it; I'm sure others on here can give you some good information on where to go, prices, etc.

I'm in the same boat with bigger clothing sizes, as I am a 5'9" woman. Most of the clothing looks like sizes I wore when I was about 10 years old, LOL!

    Location, Location??

 Well BigJim, I can't remember if you said you were planning to settle here or not, If you do intend to settle here then It really depends where you decide to live, if in Manila then no problems, Like any capitol city they are modern. If you are talking Dgte, there are shops that sell furniture and all consumer goods, the PI has moved on in the last 20 years, QUALITY! well that of course is a personal thing, What you consider a good Quality is not others opinions. There are many Furniture Makers around this area, we have ours made, manly because we can choose size and add or delete things. Upholstered furniture can be purchased in 3/4 outlets and to me is not too bad on Quality. It all depends I guess where you intend to settle but to answer you, no you don't need to have it made, off the shelf is available.
As to clothes, well again I have come across many outlets with XXL, In fact only Yesterday I came across Polo/T.Shirts in XXXL. It Depends on what you want, Formal Wear I think is a tailors Job and again there are a few good Ones here.
BigJim, Worry not too much, 20 years is a long time, PI has learned a lot, still not perfect but getting there.

Furniture available in Dumaguete will most likely disappoint foreigners.
Maebe it is a good idea to bring pictures or a catalogue with pictures of furniture of your choise.
If you cannot find what you like you always can look for a shop that can make them(less or more)
Don't expect perfect copy's but at least they can be made of solid wood (Germelina or acacia)

I agree with Firefly, in Dumaguete, you have to lower your western standards when shopping for furniture, comfort and quality just not the same. Makati no problem. I will ask JackP where he found the large t-shirts, the only 2x I found here was a Dickies at Robinson's and it was actually closer to a US XL and could only wear it once and the wife got it to sleep in. A lot of people here go to Cebu City to shopping.

Ho's marketing has Sando's, T-Shirts and Polo's up to XXXXL , cheaper and better quality than all that "faked-branded" in Robisons.

we all would probably look a bit let's say strange if we press our Adonis-like bodies in the boulevard ho's cloths.
Ho's marketing is in Real Street close to City burger (w/out burger). across the street is Opsimas, they also have big sized shirts and can organize them.

Thanks for the info sure helps in packing. Plans are to locate in Dumaguete, but we're going to look around for a while to get the feel of the island.
