Hi everyone! I wonder if someone here could help me? I will be coming to dumaguete in a couple of weeks to marry my beautiful mahal. I would like to surprise her by wearing a traditional barong at the wedding. Any ideas where I could purchase one in dumaguete? Bearing in mind I'm 6"3 & weigh around 90kg. Any advice would be gratfully received.

    Welcome Rayjen.
Wives are a "little different" here as I discovered a year ago.
They like to, and take pride, in doing things for their husband. I had to learn to sit still for my pedicure weekly, allow my wife to give me a bath daily (that was hard to do) and allow her to pick out my clothes.
If I were you, I would ask her to help choosing the right Barong. Any upscale men's shop carry them. My wife picked mine out after having me try on several styles.
    Welcome to the Philippines.
No place like it on earth.
    Ladies better than anywhere else.
    A marriage here is "forever".
    Enjoy........

Welcome to Dumaguete and the forum Rayjen. If you cannot find a size that fits, there are some tailors in town that can make one of good quality quickly for you. Good luck with everything. Use this forum if you have more questions, there are many helpful folks here.

Hi all! Thanks for your replies & best wishes messages! I can remember lee plaza from my previous trips so might try there.. Only problem getting out on my own to purchase as would like to keep as surprise! Also of course there's robinsons which was been built on my last trip. The weddings a bit of a rush job as we were originally going to apply for a fiancé visa & get married in London, but we've had a change of plan hence the rush job. Any other tips on little touches that would go down well with the inlaws would be most appreciated..

Rayjen, you may benefit reading my posts from last year regarding getting married in Dumaguete. There are certain requirements you have to fill that will take some time. Firstly, your wife has a lot of paperwork to submit, then you require a lot of paperwork you have to show, then you have to take a pre-marriage seminar, then you have to apply for a license, they you have to wait for the license. Your wife must show residence of at least 6 mos in the town you will marry in. All in all, it took me a couple of months. If you were married before, make sure you bring your original divorce decree. Please read all the posts and let us know if you have questions. It is an onerous process and takes tons of patience and perseverance. Good luck.

There is a barong shop right across the highway from Robinson's Mall. I forget the name of it, but they carry barongs of all shapes, sizes, fabrics, and colors up to 5x. I found one that fit my 6'6" and 265 lb. frame there with no problem. One of our neighbors did a slight alteration of it and it fits perfectly.

Lee Plaza, Mar1, Cang's Inc. all have barongs. You can even rent one if you like, but buying is better since there are reasonably-priced barongs in Lee Plaza. Good to your wedding with your Mahal.

PatO gave a good hint to help you "cope" with everything. Several of us here have posted on everything that was needed and/or required and the times and hassles involved.
The one thing that surprised me was that my wife's parents had to sign a "permission slip" for us to get married because she was only 23 years old at that time, in addition to all of the other things PatO mentioned above.
You can search "all post by" PatO and ronv8917 and learn a bunch.
Original certified docs of your birth and previous marriage divorce, or in my case, my previous wife's death, will be needed. No photocopys.
A pocket full of 500 peso bills will help speed the process.
Good luck to you and please keep us posted.
