    Cheap or expensive?
It all depends how you live and what you expect, but more important what you don’t expect.
If you need a lawyer for whatever reason it may be it might be more expensive than you expect and the result may be very uncertain.
In Holy Child hospital I got a very satisfactory treatment from familydoctor Yee for 100 pesos, in the same hospital dental doctor P.Chua give me a rootcanal treatment and charged me 12,500 pesos while the same treatment in Belgium will cost me around 4,800 pesos.
Renting a house can be cheap but probably you will miss certain convenient parts.
Imported food but also local products like processed meat and even icecream are more expensive than many other parts of the world.
Transportation in general is certainly cheaper but for those living in the west of the US who knows the big 99 cents stores, this you will not find in the Philippines.
Certainly there are cheap stores with mostly Chinese products like Unitop but these product you probably use once a month or once a year.
If you go to a supermarket and buy some bread, jam, butter/margarine, milk fruits and vegetables perhaps you spend more than in many parts of the world including the West of the US.
Living in the Philippines is cheaper than the West as long you don’t need any service without fixed price like lawyers, doctors, appliance- or other repairs or any administrative job.
One thing is sure, beer is cheaper here than in the rest of the world and that’s perhaps the reason why so many Expats stick to this place.

    Amen, and AMEN

You nailed it!! We have the aircon (split unit and 2 window units), generator, sealed windows with screens, yep, got the hot water heaters, our own car, we also like western food, and my husband has major health issues, so I can echo your sentiments that these will indeed raise anyone's cost of living.....but, even with these, it is still much cheaper for us to live here than it was in the U.S. I had to work full time for us to make ends just barely meet there, and I was able to quit work all together when we moved here.

Dude-Are you living in Dumaguete as of Feb 2011?You mentioned 6,000 pesos a month for rent. Are there still places like that available in Dumaguete? What about furnished apartments?Do these apartments have hot and cold running water? If I rent an unfurnished apartment can I pick up some cheap furniture, bed ect?I will be in Dumaguete July 9th to retire and will need an inexpensive place to rent for I will have a modest retirement income.Any advice/suggestions are welcomed by you or any of the members here.Thanks...Jimmy in Shanghai......jlewellen2003@yahoo.com:smile:

To give you somewhat of an idea for living here, last year I rented a small 60 smtr 2 bedroom 2 bath house on a 384 smtr lot for 9,000. I bought a hot water heater for one bedroom and an aircon. I bought a new 3 piece living room set for 10,000. My Noreco bill was avg 4,000 and my water 400. There were 3 of us living there, tv, computer, frig, aircon, hot water heater so Noreco bill was high. That was in Dumaguete 5 min from Robinsons. There were cheaper apts in that area. Skycable internet and tv was around 1,500. Hope that helps with your planning. Btw, I spent time in Shanghai, I like it much better here!
