Man forks over $200,000 to fake online love

    By Suzanne Choney

Love — online or otherwise — can be blind, but for one Illinois man, it turned out to be devastating, emotionally and financially. After giving $200,000 to a "woman" he met online, but never in person, the "woman" turned out to be a crook, and his money is long gone.

Most of us are savvy enough not to turn over money to strangers in the real or digital world. This poor guy —age 48 — wired varying amounts of money to different bank accounts in the United States, as well as places like England, Nigeria and Malaysia, over more than two years to his "love."

The only way the scam came to light in recent days is because he went to police in Naperville, Ill., where he lives, asking for help to rescue the "woman." He believed she "had been kidnapped in London," according to what police told The Naperville Sun.

The only proof the man had of his love's existence was an ID card that was provided to him; it was, in fact, a sample driver's license from Florida, the police said.

"According to the report, when the officer stated the female did not exist, the man 'was in disbelief,' " the newspaper said.

So are we. But our heart goes out to this guy, no matter what. Our wallets— well, we'll keep them in our pockets, thank you very much.

great, I would be interested, whats your price, I just won in the british royal lottery and have a huge bank-account in Burkina Faso...

...but... a 25 minute walk through downtown Dumaguete (or 20seconds McDo  ) gives you plenty examples of individuals who lost way more than 200k to real persons and their families, including the option of going away as their life-savings are gone...

that guy of the OP had a very expensive lesson, but is still free ..

I suspect we have all been fools at one time or another.....especially when it comes to sex and romance

I was listening to a buddy, we will call him George, brag about his new girlfriend.... she had her own house....was a great cook......owned a beautiful car and was a "Tiger in the bed"..... He even showed me her picture...... I told him he was lucky.....she is gorgeous

A week later my girlfriend asked me where I had been lately... I smiled and said, "OH.....I thought George was taking up my slack".....

I usually try to collect "good' stories for the newpapers but every once in awhile I bump into a local horror story..... I met Mike in a small nasty shack in Bacong..... he was "rescued" (?) by some relatives of his wife from the streets of Manila....
Mike came to the Philippines and fell in love..... he went back to Ireland.....sold the family farm and moved to Manila.....got married..... built a nice home and started a nightclub in Manila..... things went fine.....for awhile..... then suddenly he found himself in the street.....his wife owned the home.....owned the business.....and had moved in her lover (female) and kicked him out .....sad thing is I suspected his rescuers were just waiting for him to get more money from Ireland before he would find himself on the street again.... nice guy but not the sharpest pencil in the box
