Greetings...I am brand spanking new here myself. I have been enjoying your forum for a couple of weeks or so and have finally jumped in.

I am Filipina, born and raised. I grew up in Quezon City, but immigrated to Toronto over 25 years ago. Of late, my husband (a Canuck who says he will be retiring in 8 years) and I have been giving serious thought to moving back to the Philippines.

Although I will always have a level of comfort in Manila, in the arms of friends and family, I am not looking forward to the pollution and congestion. My husband and I are looking for a slower pace...hence the interest in Dumaguete. Admittedly, Batangas and Baguio are also in the running.

We've been scouring real estate sites and chanced upon one property in Santa Catalina. It's not a location that's discussed much here...is the place any good? I gather it's hilly, but it does not seem to have the broader appeal of Valencia. Info on Santa Catalina would be appreciated. For instance, what's their expat population like? What amenities are available?

You guys sound like fun! We are almost tempted to hop on a plane for home, but we already have our vacations planned for this year...Peru in April, Cuba in June and the Dominican Republic in October.

I really hope to hear from some of you.

    Thanks!

Valencia is about 8 km from Dumaguete while Santa Catalina is 93 km away.
That makes a difference of 2 hours driving one way and that is long, long if you want to go to a hospital, a supermarket or just an ATM for some money.
If you consider that most expats dont like to drive in the dark for 5 km you might think twice before selecting a place that far away from Dumaguete.

    Santa Catalina

macsmomma, firstly, welcome to the forum, I think you will find it useful. Maybe I can help you with Santa Catalina, my wife is from there and her family still lives there. Santa goes from the sea to the mountains, in terms of size (not population) I believe it is the 2nd largest municipality in the province. It is about a 2 hour ride from Dumaguete, buses every 30 min I think.
Which barangay is your interested property in. I can ask my mother-in-law to check out prices, if you want to provide lot location, lot size, and price she may be able to add value. Btw, not much there at all, I have to go to Bayawan to a chicken place when I go there.

Firefly and Pato, thanks for the comments. Sorry for the lag in my response as I've just gotten up (12 hour time difference).

Ninety-three kms does not seem so bad, but road conditions (and the dark) would be factors. I can't recall which barangay the property is in (I would need to look it up when we get home).

It's a little premature to rule it out or in at this time...we're in very early planning stages. In 8 years, the urban sprawl might even get there.

Bayawan is very fast growing, maybe not in 8 years, but in 20 years Bayawan may have the facility's you find in Dumaguete now.
