I read in one of the threads that the expat population in Dumaguete stands at about 12000. Is that really how many expats are living in or near Dumaguete? Maybe I read it wrong, and I wasn't able to find it again. Anyway, if that is true, then isn't that close to 10% of the total population? I honestly didn't realize there were that many expats living there, as that would mean less than 3% actively use this site. I think that's why I was questioning the expat population total. If it is that high, where did that number come from? I know this isn't really an important question, but I am just curious about it because it feels like it is a pretty high number. I hope someone can correct me on this, and see if anyone can find an accurate number.
I think this would help...saw this info at the negros orietal local government site: Published on Tuesday, 15 March 2011 11:24 Written by jajton Hits: 74 Citizenship Residents of Negros Oriental are mostly Filipinos. Others include Chinese, British, Amercian, Algerian, German and others. Citizenship and Total Number, 1990 Citizenship Total Number 1. Filipino 921,963 2. Chinese 378 3. British 188 4. American 123 5. Algerian 17 6. German 13 7. Japanese 13 8. Indian 13 9. Australian 12 10. Others 72 11. Not stated 464
Thank you very much for that information. I thought I had probably read one of the strings wrong. So, from that list, overall, there doesn't really seem to be that many expats in all of Negros Oriental. Anyway, thank you again.
1200! Tom! from the OP's calculations of before, I guess the Figure if 12.000 should have read 1.200, this seems more like it. We did have a Thread before, last year, much along the same lines as yours. I am not too sure, if we ever got to the exact figure. It was stated in that thread, that Dgte had the Highest or pretty well d*mn near it, the highest pro-rata Ex-pat population in the PI, whether this is a true fact, I am not sure! Again, trawling will give you the Answer. Jack P.
Shoulder Shrug! KDF, Did we not ask Peter Bueno this before and did he not say, "How would I know" I believe he said, "I only deal with those that choose to Extend and stay Legal" as far as I am aware, there is NO register of aliens in Dumaguete, I do stand, to be corrected of course. Jack P.
well the stated list is 21 years old, not much value in that anymore. The foreigner number in Dumaguete and surrounding areas is estimated by officials with a number of 3.500. Many of them don't or don't need to show up at the BOI in Dumaguete. The number of 1200 Expats sounds quite accurate. Many are here on tourist visa, or no visa
Expats are foreigners working/living in a foreign country, right? Tourist are considered a visitor right? So, expats and tourist are different? Please correct me. Thanks!
Newbie27, many foreigners here (I wonder what the percentage is) do not have a permanent visa and use the in and out tourist visa process. Therefore, as Rhoody stated, the immigration office would not have a valid count. My guess is there are now more Americans (US and Canadians) than other countries. I have been told there are many Swiss and Norwegians, and of course Brits and Germans. I have an Austrian and a German married to two sisters who are building houses next to mine. There is a French guy down the street and a Belgian a little further down, two brits a mile away, and that is in the small town of Bacong. United Nations Deux.
1,200 sound like a very low number. I would guess in excess of 5,000 and that might even be low. There are many that rarely if ever venture into town except to shop. I admit you tend to see many of the same people day after day and this could certainly skew the perception of less than there are. Of course this is all guess work but after six years here I think I can make a guesstimate as good as anyone and 5,000 plus would be my guess
