Jack, I do believe the vast majority do need help. Certainly some will only write for only the sake of writing.
But like executing an unpaid function in any type of social group for which you spend a lot of time for the benefit of its members, you never may expect gratitude-awards from the group members.
IF they do however (luckily some do !) it feels rewarding and made it worth to do all the effort. But don't count on it.
People are more and more only 'joining' for the sake of 'needing answers' and not taking part in discussions or giving feed back which requires some EFFORT.
But again ...... nobody can be forced to do that.
I had some functions during many years in a diving club. I did that for my own pleasure combined with the need within the club.
My pleasure went down after many years as also the reactions by members for my efforts were reduced.
So time to step aside which was good for me as well, I figured out soon.
I see it as a 'normal' thing in the modern time. People take anything they can get for free for granted.

jack, i'm sorry that u guys often feel like giving well thought out replies to someone's question is a thankless job. u strike me as a very friendly person, one who goes out of his way to make someone feel welcome and i'm sure that doesn't go unnoticed by other members. i don't understand why some old DI members (no offense meant with the word "old" hehe) could be thought of as having "higher than mighty attitudes," though because i certainly don't see it. might need to go back a few pages of posts to find out...

but the thing is, some people have an issue with expressing gratitude. or they could have simply started a post, forgot about it and moved on with their lives, or decided that being a "lurker" is more to their liking... which reminds me, i hope i thanked u and the other guys enough for even bothering to reply to my post.

you might be able to log in with via a free proxy server.
also if you have the time just try to give us some info like I described here : http://www.dumagueteinfo.com/board/general-chat/dumagueteinfo-log-issues-8473.html

If you have even more time I would be up for some Salsa

Anyway, boards like DI are different to sports-boards or similar, where people discuss about the same (but each week new topic). Here we give info and our settings are that you get your notification mail including the content, and that's it... others find the answers on our countless content-pages (yes, might be surprising for some members but DI is not the forum, that's only a part of it)

As long we have members not getting tired answering the same question again and again it is a great little playground.

As someone who plans to make Dumaguete his home later this year, may I offer my thanks for all of the information that I have read on the Forum over the past couple of years. It not only provides specific data points and easy reference for a "newbie", but also gives me a sense of the expat community in which I will be living---especially the "sense of humor' that is frequently apparent. To all of you who have been a wealth of information, THANK YOU!

I think you guys are also not considring the demographics and medium. To us older citizens who grew up on please and thank you, yes we may feel slighted but the fact is that the internet is extremely non-personal and for most people an information tool kind of like of book. Most of us have read really excellent books that taught us a lot but have you actually told the book "thank you!" I don't think so.

While some forums are more personal than others and all have various degrees of experts or expertise this is still a small forum. Some info seekers also are not finding the quick responses that they are seeking but that may be more a nature of our subject Dumaguete. While many of us talk it up, many are probably shocked and disappointed when we try to tell them what is available and what is not available. Reading some posts you would think Dumaguete was on par with say San Diego, but we all know it is not. I am more intertained by those posts.

I would say I am more a member for the entertainment value but sometimes I need the knowledge or to just share a thought but that is the community part of this site that appeals to me. Right answers are more subjective than objective anyway. So thank you for being entertaining and sometimes informative.
