Hi folks, just digesting the news about Microsoft taking over Skype for the modest sum of $8.5 billions......hope they are not going starting charging users, else.....
By the way, how popular is Skype in the Phils?
Has any forum user adopted this media to communicate?
    Cheers, Marco.

Every time I've tried to download Skype it always has some kind of a glitch. I gave up trying to download/use it. In all fairness though, I have friends in Europe that use it to communicate with family in the Philippines and they love it.

I know why Microsoft bought it and paid such an exorbitant amount.....advertising revenue!

Yahoo Messenger has adds while you are using it. Millions of users = a lot of advertising revenue.

Hi knowdafish, well I'm using it and it's quiet fine.
One has got to have at least Microsoft XP installed to run it, then the more the memory RAM the better. Only complain I have about it is that the broadband speed in the Phils is a bit of a let down if using Skype with video and leads to cut offs or echoes. I used to call Europe when I was in the Phils last and it was great (Skype to phone line).
I agree with you about Microsoft hoping to make a kill through advertising revenue....it did not work with eBay though....we'll see.
    Ciao, Marco.

What I always find interesting about these kinds of stories is how one company in this case Microsoft will buy another company like Skype that has been in business for years and has never made a dime of profit and yet pay 8.5 billion dollars for it...Something about that seems rather odd...like some kind of ponzi scheme

    Everyday!

UJ. have to Agree with KDF, Skype was at first difficult to download, now it is good, We (Azon & I) talk every day on it. Our Skype to Skype is free at the moment BUT who knows, what they will do, Skype to Land line/Mobile is fairly cheap. 20p (£) per min .04p (£) per text. All in all we spend about £20 a month which is about 1/3 the cost for terrestrial phone lines. Bearing in mind I am in Spain, this is brilliant. I think the video Call is far better than YM but then, that is due to server problems with YM. I just hope that Microsoft don't mess up what, is at the moment, a Good Media to have. I believe UJ, that quite a few of us are on skype, most will have the icon on their Header page.

I use Skype regularly, especially at weekends, to talk with family Phils/UK, Phils/Oz and Phils/Canada. Rarely have a problem with it, and it seems to be far more reliable than Yahoo. If on a wired connection or wifi, the voice is clear and the picture has smooth movement, unlike the jerky system on yahoo which seems to be one frame per second. If I'm somewhere a bit remote and have to use a usb then there may be a short delay on type-talk and may have to dispense with a picture, but other than that, it beats yahoo hands down.
