I was thinking with all the universities there, and probably some schools that cater to visiting Korean students, it might be a good compromise...as I've lived in Manila and Cebu before and was looking for a smaller, more laid-back city that's close to the ocean and a bit cheaper without giving up everything and living a more "provincial" life near Siargao.

I've also thought about cities like Bacolod, CDO, Iloilo City...that have Robinson's/SM, movie theatre and some modern conveniences, and yet not overrun with traffic and crime.

    Thoughts?

My background, American, 41, two Master's degrees (one in Curriculum and Instruction for Secondary Education), almost 10 years of teaching experience, BA in English (University of Iowa), four years of teaching high school (certified) English and Social Studies (Government/Economics, World History, European History, Sociology, Psychology, Geography) in Kansas City, one year at an international school in Colombia, 3 years teaching university English classes in China and Thailand.

I've also worked a lot with TOEIC/IELTS/TOEFL and quite a bit with humanities/essay writing part of the SAT/ACT/GRE.

And coaching almost any sport: baseball/softball, basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, racquetball, ultimate frisbee and soccer, to name a few.

Finally, am looking for an apartment (possibly furnished or with air con, if it's a window/bedroom unit and not one of the big wall units) to rent in the 7500-12,500 php price range.

Dumaguete is a great place for a native speaker to teach. The one downside is the pay. You can't earn enough to support yourself in comfort. I'm pretty tight with my money, but still spend twice what I make. But if you have savings or supplemental income, it's a lot of fun.

You seem amply qualified to teach both privately or at one of the colleges or universities
...... I would offer my services to Silliman University ( Dr Ben Malayang).....they have several foreigners on their staff and are experienced at working out the visa restriction....probably would pay the best salary.... and might even help with your accommodations

You seem to be realistic in your expectations on rent..... I would suggest you network the local foreigners.... if they do not know of a place they probably know of a reliable Filipino who can find you a place

Tutoring private students (Korean) is probably your most lucrative option.....

i really hope u find good employment here. would be nice for dumagueteño students to be exposed to a native english speaker. u might want to see Dr. Dinopol of Negros Oriental State University (NORSU). she's the director of the english department there. teachers at norsu say most of them used to teach at silliman university and they left silliman because the pay is better at norsu. so now there are more english teachers with PhDs in norsu than in silliman.

    good luck
