Hi. My name is Roger. I would like to come to Dumaguete for a year or so to help out some friends. I would need to supplement my finances to come for that length of time and was thinking of doing English language teaching/coaching to assist. I'm ready and willing to do a TESOL/TEFL course in preparation. Because of my current work, doing that online would be far more achievable. Can anyone give me advice on this? There are many sites offering TESOL/TEFL courses and qualifications online. Will an online course be sufficient? Which providers and courses are more respected locally in Dumaguete? Who is looking for ESL teachers or tutors and what qualifications do they require? Is Dumaguete overcrowded with ESL teachers?

I can't help thinking that English as a first language would be more useful than a second language !! English is the official language of business and law, but at times you wouldn't think so. ESL is taught quite widely in the Philippines and many Koreans come here to learn English. As an Englishman I find that quite baffling, if not intriguing.

I think you should first investigate whether you would actually be allowed to teach and earn a salary. Work permits for foreigners are rarer than t*ts on a bull. I have previously offered, at no cost, to help school leavers and undergraduates to improve their spoken English, but if I do that for nothing, it takes away the opportunity for a local to earn a crust by doing the same thing for a fee.

I don't know if Dumaguete has an excess of ESL teachers; I'm a little concerned that it may get overloaded with Rogers, which would confuse me if I had a Lolo moment. :D:D

One guy who'd previously taught ESL here, told me today he thought the market was weaker due to the number of schools for that now, and the fact that Koreans have bought themselves a large compound and might build their own school there.
