One annoyance that just does not seem to go away is the bug situation in the house. My wife and helper 17 (I just number them now, no more names) do their best to clean the house and not make it a place that bugs can find something to eat, but then there is the house itself, which seems to be a source of food. While I really enjoy watching lizards battle it out in my office at nigh.. I pretend they are little dinosaurs in my own little Jurassic Park I do not enjoy their food source. We have sprayed, used "mosquito killers", sticky paper you name it with lackluster results. I was musing that I wish they had the bombs we used to use in the west to do a whole house fumigation and the wife said, "why don't you try handyman". So off I go to the mall and interrupt the clerk in the middle of his chikka chikka session with another clerk to ask them for a bomb to kill all of the bugs. To my surprise, they just happened to have such a thing - They call it a "fogger". It is imported from the USofA under the HotShot brand. It comes in a 3 pack for 899php and promises to cover a whole house. A regular pesticide party pack! Knowing there was more than likely going to be a brownout on Sunday, I purchased the kit and took it home. I told the wife to take all of the dishes outside to the dirty kitchen (which is quite clean) along with the kids toys, as recommended by the manufacturer because we were going to nuke the house. I set out finding the most tactical locations to create my holocaust as if I was a military commander. The wife was bemused with my excitement and told me not to get my hopes up too high. Like clockwork, the brownout occurred at 8:45 am and I deployed my nukes. 3 hours later we opened the place up and aired it out, The wife and number 17 cleaned the whole place, swept up the victims we could find and mopped. All of the dishes were also washed before going back in the house and were satisfied we followed the directions. So far, the results are good, even in this POS hous we are renting that has hundreds of entry points for insects. If you have insects that are very persistent, this may be a good solution. I Thought I would just pass that along.
I've found that the best thing to keep the bugs out are good window and door screens. The problem with insecticides are they are very temporary. They kill the beneficial bugs along with bug eating lizards and bug eating frogs. Beneficial bugs? Yes, like Praying Mantis and Spiders that eat other bugs.
I would agree with you if I lived in a house that was not of shoddy workmanship, but this is a rental and it is a concrete piece of Swiss cheese when it comes to sealing the elements or bugs out. My answer is to nuke them so that my kids don't get bit by ants, mosquitoes and such.
There's only one way to get rid of ants here, and that is to not leave any food or food residue out for them to eat. If you try to spray the ants away, they'll just come right back as soon as the food gets left out again. Just try and think of the ants as the "cleaning crew"....It makes living with them a bit easier.
I understand the concept that one should not leave food for them and we are vigilant in that regard. It takes a lot of effort to keep up with a 7 month old and a 3 year old that are prone to dispersing crumbs, but we do a good job of that. I have a light socket in my office that is recessed in the ceiling and there seems to be something edible in there as it has been a place that the aunts gravitate to. Then there is the termite problems in the wooden door frames in the concrete Swiss cheese house. Who knows why the aunts seem to find something edible in the cable modem and routers. I have more frogs in my yard than I can count and they do a good job of eating the mayflies that tend to swarm outside at night. Anyhow, the original idea of the thread was to let people know: If you have tried everything else such as screens, and keeping the place hospital clean and still have an ant problem the nuclear option is there and you can find it at Handyman Hardware in the mall. Once it is done, then a proactive approach such as killing the scouts will be an easier task.
Hi JoeMabini. I hope you have had some success with your new weapons in your campaign. I have enjoyed reading this informative post. Maybe your Cheese House lease will be up soon and you can relocate to a more secure and Bug less establishment. I will research your previous posts to find out where you reside in Duma so that I can not rent that same Cheesy house if I God willing get the chance to locate nearby.:D Take care Joe and all.
