⌛ Wodden swimming goggles

One day I was walking around Dumaguete City Public Market I came across something really bizzare, wodden swimming goggles.

I bought a pair at the price of P58 - and I can still not figure out how anybody could actually use them and keep water out of them. I will shoot a couple of pictures of them later and post them on the board.

If anybody knows how to seal wodden swimiing gogles then by all means please post instructions here

Wooden Goggles for Swimming, Snorkeling and Diving

 

I've used these in the old days on Oahu. However, they are no longer being made by the old Japanese man and can no longer be found there.

They are great if you just want to swim light and look around under the water. However, though they can't be "cleared" in the normal manner of exhaling through the nose, they do respond to 'spit' or 'seaweed' to keep them from fogging up. It is a hit and miss thing where sealing is concerned. The ones I used were remarkable as they were sealed by adjusting the head straps. I am small to medium frame and they did work for me. Don't dive deep or try to scuba as you can't equalize. Mostly good for surface and shallow skin diving imho to about 10 feet. Any deeper than 4 meters and I would worry about glass fragments stuck all over in your eyeball. First Aid if the shrapnel from the lenses were made of steel, is to use a strong magnet to remove the metal shavings from eyeball. You all have a nice day. The weather is nice in Anchorage, Alaska at the moment, but I wish I were there. Would certainly love to meet some from DI on my next trip. I think you guys are great and this is a wonderful forum.

Actually, I know about their "un"availability in Honolulu cuz I really wanted a pair again after more than 30 years and was heartbroken and sad that "NO MORE"

 

How well do wodden swimming goggles work when you're under waater?

they do work ... a kind of...
you tighten them with a rubber-strap which squeeze them on your eyes that they are sealed, it can become pretty uncomfortable after a few minutes.

The vision can at best be described as tunnel-vision, the angle of your view is very narrow

 

The frames of the best ones I have seen are carved from caribao horn. I have seen locals dive to 30 meters with them without problems.

 

very good description ... correct: they cannot be cleared.

Also only about 50% of divers get them to fit right away. Others need some time, some will never get them to fit since they are rigid.
I dove to 21m with them, but one can never be sure about breaking the glass.

The goggles are fun, look good and a great present with a special touch, but they can never compete with a speedo or diving mask.
