Hi Rob, I know I am VERY new to the forum here, but I think your going to have to be a tad more specific with your thoughts!
Also, you're also listed as being in Ohio, so are you looking to be an overseas partner, or are you planning to more to PH/Duma?

We are moving to PH within the next year or so... no later than sept 2012... just trying to get a jump on things there and meet some new people that might be able to help with the move.
trying to get a feel for things there.

    Rob, welcome to the forum.
I hate to tell you the news, but there is nothing you can do in La Libertad that'll make you much $$ at all.
If you're going to come over and rely on making money here to survive, than I think you're making a big mistake.
If you're just a worker at heart and plan on a business just to have something to do, then thats fine.
But if you're seriously planning on building a business here to provide money to live on in the style you're used to living, please reconsider.
    It's not the same.

From all the feedback I have seen over the last 6 months, setting up and achieving a successful business in PH is the exception, not the norm. So as Manzanita said, don't go to PH expecting to make enough money to survive on.
I have seen quite a few blogs/websites from expats who try to suppliment their pensions with advertising space and e-books, but I think only a minority make anything with that type of venture.
There is a lot of experience on this forum, and I am sure people will advise you what to stear clear of, but I think you need to be more specific with your objectives than just stating 'business' opportunities.
What area are you interested in and where does YOUR experience lie.
I have seen it said a million times on PH forums, - don't come to PH and expect to set up a business that is also new to you, and expect to be successful.
My personal plan is to have enough pension and personal savings to live comfortably on, and then do something that I am good at just to keep me occupied. I will not be expecting to make my fortune running a business in PH.
I'm trying not to put a dampener on your plans, I am just being realistic based on the millions threads I have read this year!

If you are going to live in Liberdad....your son will have a long commute to Foundation University.... !!! better include provisions for a room and living expenses in your budget

As a foreigner operating a business in the Philippines is a tricky thing..... first you will probably need to become a permanent resident.... foreigners here on a tourist visa are not legally allowed to work.... even if you become a legal permanent resident you will not be allowed to own and operate a retail business yourself.....you would have to put it in your wife's name or get a Filipino partner (usually a bad idea)....
There are some great business opportunities here ..... but you have to be very careful
I know of a group that is trying to put in a high class restaurant on the boulevard..... they are looking for a new partner (one partner dropped out with a personal problem)
Do not know the economic climate in Liberdad..... I respect and like their Congressional representative..... but am not familiar with the economic and political climate there

I think "Uncle Fat Bloke" is correct.....do not count on a supplemental income .... go slow and do your homework

"This ain't Kansas any more Toto"...... The Philippines is a whole new experience with new rules.....
