I've been touring in the Philippines for nearly two years, and wanted to settle somewhere relatively crime and pollution free, although I've never actually seen any trouble in all of that time. Come to Dumaguete everyone told me its nice and peaceful. So I moved in to temporary apartment on EJ Blanco Road, Daro. Three weeks ago. Since then i have been spat at in Kabankalan City buy three lads, and this morning at 0543hrs, I woken by three shots from a pistol, right outside my door. A young lad of around 20 was shot in the neck, and was rushed to hospital ..... Gentle people, shooting right outside my door, maybe I should of stayed in Cebu !! :(

Well, if you intend to stay on EJ Blanco road, you best get used to it. There is a shooting there about once a month.

Or maybe you should have paid attention to previous posts about the change in Dumaguete's demographics and population. Its a Mecca alright. But unless I have a business to run, Dumaguete would still be the place for me.

sfgb35, just wanted to tell you, Kabankalan City is not anywhere close to Dumaguete, as a matter of fact, it's not even in Negros Oriental.

And unfortunately, people here do not consider spitting in public to be the taboo that Westerners do. So "spitting at you" might have been just a non-designated expulsion of excess saliva.

But even better news is, that if you insist on living in Claytown, living next door to a neighbor proficient in home-defense shooting is the best situation you could be in out there.

I just wanted to re-post this to show my fellow members that I'm not always pessimistic.

Unfortunate news. Agree with the spitting, another bad trait here. Along with the lack of common sense and thought for others so maybe an accident. Ive been hit a couple of times on my bike passing a jeepney by a TB thrower ! I can only go on my experience and preferences but i advise people to look at the South of the City. From Robinsons to Dauin. A lot more peaceful, less traffic and safer. Just bad luck, after living in Cebu City for fours years i cant stress how much better Dumaguete City is to live

No, No dont get me wrong the spitting was aimed at me, along with some cursing and aggressive attitude. It was not just the pinoy, spitting thing . . .

    ?

I was just trying to give benefit of doubt, so sorry to hear that happened. But Cebu is 1000 times worse. Not just crime which i have witnessed on more than a few occassions but add to crime, pollution and general cost of living. I was warned about the area you are in and some surrounding and told to go South. I was lucky enough to take the advice and move to Bacong. I drive down the road or go to the market with my boy and we get people shouting Hello Jack ( My sons name ) He plays outside and i dont have to worry. Please dont let a couple of unfortunate bad experiences put you off

I am a long, long, long way from being put off, i was just surprised, its the first real trouble i have had in two years of being here, just typical the two instances should happen in the same week and only two weeks after i arrive . . . I feel far safer here than i would do in my own country, UK.

I meant i hope your unlucky experiences didnt put you off Dumaguete. Not the Philippines  Im from the uk aswell. Because of my little boy starting school im now thinking about returning for his education. A little bit of foul drunken language and being spat at in town on a weekend will be minor problems, and thats just from our lovely women... haha
