as long you agree to the terms of use of websites you submitting to, you can basically write on your picture what you want, that is of no interest at all.

of course (like in most cases) a third party can not use them legally, unless they have whatever agreement with the owner of the site you submitted.

In the instance of Flickr, it's Getty Images that is the only one allowed to license work.

Flickr and Pbase are widely used by many photographers as a storage site

Some good dialog here and i thank everyone for their comments

well, we all have to exist with it somehow.

I brought my 2 Dalmatians to a Photostudio and found a faked copy of the picture a few days later online...

It's more annoying than anything else, i'm a retired pilot and a few years ago i flew an Australian photographer around Siquijor/Apo and got some fantastic shots of Apo and the surrounding reefs.
I gave the disc to a printing shop in Dumaguete to have a picture printed for the owner of Coral Cay, Siquijor got the disc back but in the coming months the photos starting appearing on Diving web sites etc.
I was a bit pissed off as in other countries you would pay a fortune for that type of work.
    Laugh or cry..

Mark, in first instance I should be offended and some seconds later as well flattered.
But I should at least contact the user (NC in this case) why they have not asked you to use your picture. They erased your mark so they know how to reach you, I guess.
Even when you can't make a legal case of it, it is a matter of politeness.
Erasing a 'watermark' without contacting the original photographer is OK to me when someone does that to make e.g. a compilation for pure private use.
But don't do such a thing for using it in a newspaper !
    Did you contact them ?
