Any suggestions for the best way to determine how much gas we have left in our tank? Thank goodness supper was finished cooking when our tank ran out, although we have a back-up electric burner for just such emergencies. In the states they have gauges you can attach to your propane tanks and they also have a type of thermal tape to stick on the outside. Are either of these available here? I had read that you can spray water on the outside of the tank and see where it condensates, that supposedly shows the level, I might have to give that a try. Thanks!!

Permres, you can get a replacement regulator with a gauge and hose at Matiao gasul store on Santa Catalina St. in town. I replaced all 3 of mine and they work fine - green - yellow-red indicators.

Easy....Buy two GAS bottles for cooking, one as a back up, no worries, and put PETROL in your car :D

    Gas

Since we don't have to replace it that often (once every 4-6 months..and we use it every day to cook!), I really don't want an extra bottle hanging around. A regulator/gauge that PatO recommended sounds like exactly what I am looking for and they are usually out to replace it within 30 minutes of our call. We keep the car topped off most of the time, but thanks anyway!!

Would you also recommend a spare car with a full tank of petrol? :-)

You could always weight it. Weigh a full one and an empty one and do the math.

Just pick it up and slosh it around, if there's nothing sloshing, it's almost empty.

The only problem with the type of gauge that is being recommended is that it measures pressure and not volume. It will tell you when it's almost empty but that's about it.
