A friend of mine retired from the railroad in the U.S. Now his problem is they won't send his retirement money out of the U.S..

I have helped him contact every bank possible in the U.S. and none seem willing to open an account on line and all require that he go there to open an account. As you know that is a very expensive way to go.

Does anyone know any way to open an account there from here?

Ron, he could try Citibank or HSBC in Manila (Cebu?) but I would find out first if they are directly connected to the US banks. When I lived in Sydney, I opened a Citibank but could not interact with my US Citibank account. Painful dilemma.

Might try going to BPI and seeing if he could get it direct deposited to their affiliate bank in New York.

Thanks Pat, but been there done that. Citi bank is not computer connected and won't help. HSBC said they could do it, but he has hit some kind of road block there too. Bank of America in Manila said they don't have customer accounts at that branch, not connected and refused to help in any way. (go figure)

    Thanks Manzanita.

He also tried that and he has an account there. It's a tough situation.

    fwiw...
about 4 months ago, i started filing out the on-line form for a capital one bank on-line checking account. the form asked for a drivers license (and expiration date) which i have from the states but it expired 4 years ago and the website wouldn't accept my application. so i called them via skype and told them i was currently in panamá but i had a stateside address and my stateside drivers license was expired and the application form wouldn't accept my license but i had a p'ma license. the fone rep didn't care about the p'ma license and told me to change the date for my expired stateside license to a year from the present date so i did and my application was accepted. couldn't be much easier than that! once you have the cap one account, you can open a fils account and transfer $ here.

capital one bank/no foreign transaction fees

    norm : ))~
currently on negros in the filippines using my capital one no foreign transaction fee atm card.

    Thanks kelpguy,

That's one we never thought about. He will be over tonight and I will suggest he tries that.

I was going to say, have him try one of the online only banks, but it looks as though you've got it handled. :D
