NBI men rescue 20 geckos in Davao

Home Updated September 20, 2011 09:38 AM 0 comment to this post

MANILA, Philippines - More than 20 geckos (tuko) were rescued yesterday by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) from a house in Davao City, rented by two Korean nationals.

Arcelito Albao, NBI spokesperson, said that their agents stormed the house in Barangay Morales, Matina district, yesterday afternoon armed with a search warrant issued by Davao City Regional Trial Court Branch 12 Judge George Omelio.

Albao said that the house was rented by Korean businessmen identified only as Mr. Wang and Mr. Kim. The two suspects have left the country, he said.

“We were able to get the search warrant last week yet, we waited for the suspects to return to the house, but on Monday, we decided to serve it and we confirmed that the suspects already left the country,” he said.

He said that the two Koreans were engaged in the illegal gecko buy and sell business. He said that they rescued more than 20 geckos worth at least P15 million.

Law enforcement agencies have been ordered to arrest people who are engaged in the sale of geckos, which are now endangered.

There have been reports that geckos are being used for laboratory experiments in the development of a medicine that can cure AIDS. There were also claims that geckos can cure cancer.

Albao said that the seized geckos would cost more than P15 million since a "tuko" weighing 400 grams would cost P500,000 to P1 million. The smallest would weigh around 100 grams and the largest would weigh more than 400 grams.

“The search was based on the reports from the neighbors. According to them, the suspects were engaged in a buy and sell business. The house is empty. No furniture or even a single chair. It is only rented to keep the geckos,” Albao said.

He said they also seized rubberized jars containing hundreds of super worms, which are allegedly being fed to the geckos.

NBI regional director Max Salvador said the seized geckos are now confined at the NBI office for proper documentation. He said the geckos will be turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

    Yeah right...

If the locals could get 50 pesos for them there would be armies out catching the poor buggers.

Some local boys walk around at night listening for Tukos. They claim they can sell them for up to 50k pesos in CDO at numerous places.

There was one living in a hollow block wall across the street from my in-laws and that b@st@rd kept me awake the first few months. Several have tried to catch him but never have. And there's one I'm my new neighborhood somewhere. I hear him at night.

These boys (teen-agers) say they have caught and sold before. Prices start about 5,000 and go up to 50,000 pesos.

They are captive raised in the U.S. by the Jeepney load with an average retail price of $20 U.S. Some of the more exotic colored ones go as high as $250 - $300 U.S.
