Hi, Ricofoto here. My wife and I are coming to Dumaguete next year for an extended stay, possibly 12 months. Rather than take out a lot of expensive travel insurance in Australia, is there any health schemes locally that I can join to cover us in the event of some health problem. We will be coming perfectly fit and healthy but like to have some cover just in case. Any suggestions would be warmly appreciated.

Generally all small and minor stuff is pretty cheap, as is medicine. Anything more than that, get yourself on a plane back to Ozz, you don;t want to be treated here unless you have to. I would buy travel insurance that just covers evacuation if you are concerned about anything major.

There are quite a few HMO's here, the waiting period if it applies may not work for you anyway

Google "health Insurance in the philippines" for lots of options

    Cheers

Phil Health is one option. They have offices in Dumaguete.

I take your point. I often visit Dumaguete but with cover from Oz. I will see what comes up though.

Good news, I read that Philhealth plans to have implemented Universal Health care in 3 years, foreigners not excluded. They now have “No Balance Billing policy (NBB) for the most common medical and surgical conditions", "no other fees or expenses shall be charged or paid for by the patient-member based on the mentioned package rates" ..

Also, they now have offer a Philhealth Privilege Card that offers "discounts on medicine purchases, medical treatments, among other products and services, to members" for only P50 ..

Philhealth has saved our family many pesos so far, appears it's getting even better.
