Some of you still on the forum, like Jack and chi town, knew me personally before I had my pretty serious stroke, others on the forum like John Boy and Garbonzo followed me through my journey.
A good friend of mine had a stroke and died this last year. So why did I survive? I am blessed to have a great wife and son, and my religion, to keep me going, along with daily meds.
So currently the stroke and age are hitting me fairly hard. I walk funky and can not walk very far, I can not sit for very long, and I use a wheel chair when I go to the bank at the mall. No complaints, life is great. I get to the gym (with a helper) 5 times a week and to all my son's soccer practices and tournaments.
As I do on every stroke update, I suggest to guys over 60 to get a check up and blood test every 3 months (I didn't) and keep your stress level low and exercise. I only drink red wine and some say that helps. Take care and thanks for the support.

I am 61, and Wife back in the West for a while as I remain here in the Philippines. Anyways, now as I am by myself I thought I would take on quit drinking and quit smoking. Glad to announce I did it. This is day 54 and not 1 drink or 1 puff. Was it easy???? NOT AT ALL!!!!! One of the most brutal 30 to 40 days I have ever had to endure. The symptoms and side effects, were un ending it seemed and very non-forgiving! I am feeling about normal this last week or so. I am proud I did it myself and with no meds, company or help! Lost both my Parents to smoking related illness and by the most part that was my inspiration other than my Loving Wife and Family and of coarse for my own health! Had 2 medical exams last 10 months and have no issues!

    Hi @PatO ,
I remember seeing the post here 10 years ago (I cannot believe it’s 10 years already) of your stroke,
It’s wonderful to see you are still with us and doing well, I can attest that red wine is definitely a good natural medicine ,
Thank you for you updates and positive attitude towards life!
all the best to you indeed

Times Mercantile (just east of Uy Matiao on Locsin Street) sells some agreeable red wines.
Look for Hardy's VR (a Cabernet Sauvignon), price around 400 or so.

I get red wine from Belcris, Sofia's, Robertson market, Lorenzo's. I agree most of the red wine selection available here sucks. I prefer Australia reds, I lived there and know the wine regions.
An option I have not tried is ordering from Makati Wine Warehouse (they will ship here). I used to buy wine there when I lived in Makati.
You can get some US reds at Sofia's, if you can afford the cost.

Thanks God you overcame this serious sickness and are in a fairly good shape. Only that matters.

I know a few guys that made same terrible experience. Some of them had a very hard life style for decades and it wasn't a very big surprise that they got a stroke.

Others were living a pretty healthy life style and got a stroke as well. Or cancer.

There are no guarantees in life. Of course moderate drinking, healthy nutrition and no smoking would be a benefit. Regularly exercises as well. No doubt about it.
