Islamic State: British parliament approves air strikes; David Cameron warns campaign could take years Britain's parliament has approved air strikes against Islamic State (IS) insurgents in Iraq, paving the way for the Royal Air Force to join US-led military action with immediate effect.
Six Cyprus-based Tornado GR4 fighter-bombers were on standby to take part in initial sorties after prime minister David Cameron recalled parliament from recess to back military action following a formal request from the Iraqi government.
Mr Cameron told MPs before the vote not to expect a "shock and awe" air campaign, while his office said a small number of service people could be sent to Iraq within hours of the vote to guide air strikes and, possibly, to train Iraqi and Kurdish Peshmerga forces battling IS militant forces.

I thought PM Cameron and opposition leader Miliband both did an admirable and convincing job presenting to UK Parliament today. The proper way they address each other and give way to the other person creates a smooth process. So as they do and say, I give way to my honourable friend Jack.

The backlash to all this, like Northern Ireland is there will never be peace in my life time!
It took thirty years to resolve the Irish problems!
When, if ever this conflict is resolved, do the politicians really think we will be loved for the destruction it has caused.
Imagine England totally Blitzed by War and having to start to rebuild all over again, then that's how the innocent people caught up in all this will feel.
As one person quoted on local radio here, You will never totally destroy Evil. I am not suggesting we give in to Terrorism, but looking back at Irag which was the greater evil Saddam Hussein or what we have now?........Poverty breeds hatred.......JB-
