Personally, I would feel extremely guilty taking handouts from the locals when I am fully capable of supporting myself (if you have enough resources to take a couple months off work/paying bills and go bike riding you are probably much better off than the locals). I wouldn't want to be a burden to any local living out in the province as most have a hard life and work hard for what little they have.......but hey, to each their own. I hope he is at least offering to do some work for them to earn his keep.
