I had one go out one time, I could see the worried look on my helper's face when it seemed rice would not be served. I was looked at like some kind of modern-day caveman when I suggested cooking the rice in a pot with some water. Made me wonder what her family did during a brownout....go hungry? Of course, my method made the rice "taste funny".I actually thought it tasted better though.....maybe it just needed to sit out for 12 hours before eating for her liking.

I've gone through 3 rice cookers in the past year, the first one I was not here so the wife bought a new one and tossed the old one. The last one went out the other day, we bought a new one but I kept the old one to see if I could figure out why it went out.
I had some time this evening to take the bottom panel off...honestly took longer to take the 3 screws out then it did to figure out what may have went wrong. These things are pretty simple once you look at them. There is an inline fuse (covered in some heat shrink) that blew, found 2 wires shorted as well. I ohmed out the element as well as looking for anything else obvious.
I did a temp fix on the 2 wires and bypassed the fuse and just boiled some water and it seemed to work OK. It was getting late so I will actually cook some rice in it tomorrow to make sure that it was just the fuse and those 2 wires. I'm not sure if I will be able to find an inline fuse to solder in but there is space to mount a fuse holder and a glass fuse.
I came up as an electrician so it was not a difficult task to troubleshoot it, but for the folks not inclined I bet there are a number of shops out there that could fix a similar appliance problem without you having to toss one out to buy a new one.
I should have a back-up rice cooker on hand...we all know how much rice gets cooked throughout the day, especially when family stops by.
