We had half dozen people come past here couple days ago, they were volunteers from the uni they said....picking up rubbish on the side of the road, and even sweeping the street, couple hours later a truck come along and picked up the rubbish they had put into bags....very heartening to see...
I really think roadsweepers are a long way off here, but some people are putting in an effort...

I totally agree that a yearly clean up is a great thing, but the root has to be attacked. That involves educating the next generation that taking care of the environment around them is the right thing to do. It has to become socially unacceptable to litter and pollute. Only then will real change take place. Instead of boasting how much more was picked up year over year, the goal should be to have less to pick up year after year.
Though not really to do with coastal cleanup,in general one of the things that amazes me is the complete lack of public trash cans. I guess I am used to having a trash receptacle on every corner which makes it just as easy to throw garbage in a can as it is to through it on the ground. Here in the Philippines, it's usually an exercise in futility trying to find one so though I want to not litter, I am left with two options. Throw garbage on the ground like everyone else or carry it with me.-

Very good practice. Should be done in elementary too.
Not only to make it clean, but to teach them that someone has to pick up the garbage they are to lazy to put in garbage bins.-

What they need here is a couple of good road sweepers with water jets, that would get the job sorted, night shift from 10pm-5am.
