Way to much thought being put into this "cultural phenomenon". Many (most?) Filipinos lie, even over the most trivial subjects (and even when the truth has no negative repercussions), simple as that. Your thoughts/feelings/loss of face is not, and never will be, taken into consideration.

This is a concept that crosses my mind now and then. When someone lies to you, they are saying several things. They don't respect you. You don't deserve to hear the truth. You aren't smart enough to tell when you are being lied to. If by some miracle someone clued you in that you were being lied to it wouldn't matter anyway because there evidently is nothing you could do about it that matters.
Wouldn't I be losing face to not call you a liar if you are telling me lies? Why is their face more important than my face?-

To take this thought to the next step, everyone listening to the "eyewitness" is loosing face by admitting by omission that they are too stupid to understand what they are seeing. Maybe a room full of people being called brain dead idiots is less offensive than calling someone a liar in the "loosing face hierarchy"?
