It is relatively safe drug. Very few people actually die from ecstacy/MDMA (this article claims that these are two different things but the Internets tells me that aren't). Their mistake was mixing it with large quantities the most harmful drug known to man and then throwing a few more harmful drugs (amphetamines and khat) in their bodies for good measure. Though those other two drugs could have just been another pill they thought was MDMA. Having an existing health/heart problem certainly didn't do them any favors either.
MDMA is a very mild hallucinogens. Nothing even remotely close to LSD or shrooms. (at least from what I'm told anyways.) I think they just had too many drugs working against them at the same time. MDMA is a party drug and regularly used in environments with lots of alcohol around, the mixture doesn't cause a problem for the vast majority of people. But these are the risks one takes when making a choice to use drugs.....bought from strangers.....without a test kit.....while extremely intoxicated....with pre-existing health conditions.

How will the human race survive without these geniuses around?
What exactly are they victims of? Oh yeah, that evil long nose drug dealer! I mean, it's not like they made a conscious decision to take a "cocktail of drugs and alcohol" while sober and they could be even remotely responsible for own personal choices.....nah, if the foreigner hadn't even been here the two little angels wouldn't have even thought about doing drugs.

And it does appear that they took PMA along with a bunch of other stuff. Either they were stuffing pills or they got this all in one. This is why you need to be hanging out with people who know what they are doing when you take drugs.

MAKATI, Manila – Two foreign nationals have been arrested in Makati City after a buy-bust operation took place with the Philippines National Police Anti-Illegal Drugs Group on Monday.
Canadian Jeremy Eaton, and Australian Damian John Berg were arrested by PNP officers after police bought 120 tablets of blue ‘cookie monster’ ecstasy from Eaton.
The same officer also bought 50 ecstasy tablet from Berg just a short time later in the same region of Makati.

Police say the two suspect are connected to the drug pushing scene in the Makati area – they are also linked to the Close-up Forever Summer Concert incident that killed 5 people including a 33-year-old American national.
Police say an investigation into the matter showed that Berg and Eaton are part of a major syndicate in the metro Manila area, as well as other cities in nearby communities.
Foreign Drug Dealers Deny Involvement
The two suspects denied the drugs they sold to undercover police are actually theirs.
Eaton said “I was arrested on the lobby with no drugs on me,” while Berg said “I have no purpose selling ecstasy. I have a good paying job.”
Once arrested the two were caught with a total of 255,000 pesos worth of street drugs and 100,000 pesos in marked money.
Both suspects will be charged with violations of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.
