Happy to see you write, if he is guilty. No matter what, I'm pretty sure the court will find him guilty. I agree it's totally stupid fight with a local. I do my best to show all people respect, but if someone attack me, I punch back, just my nature. I live here more than 6 years now, but will never agree with the lack of justice to foreigners, and the racism a part of the native exercise. Several years in jail for a punch, come on, out of proportions

Agree, but for some reason I believe the story to be mostly true. Nothing to back that up, just a gut feeling. I've seen the nasty foreigner mentality far too long and far too frequently. There is very little doubt in my mind that the physical altercation was started by the German. (And I have seen the same percentage of foreigners driving like complete nuts as I have Filipino...actually, probably a little higher percentage of foreigners drive like nuts compared to the locals. I don't automatically assume the accident was caused by the Filipino.)

I wouldn't immediately jump on the bandwagon and publicly convict a foreigner based on what is printed in the news paper. I think most of us know when a foreigner is arrested the press comes running and only interviews the alleged victim. If a foreigner proves themselves innocent nothing will be printed.

That being said, if he is guilty something should be done so he doesn't make the good foreigners also look guilty just for being white and here.

Couldn't agree more with that statement. And there is absolutely no way of knowing who is connected to who in the Philippines, which is why I avoid confrontations with locals at all costs. The bipolar/mentally ill/stupid expats are best served to stay away from the Philippines...though it seems that the Philippines is a black hole that those exact types can't help but get pulled in to. The Philippines is not a place for the broke/mentally ill/stupid expat, there is a steep learning curve and no social programs to fall back on, most of those types will end up in prison, on the streets or dead if they don't run back home with their tails between their legs soon enough.

I have read too many stories of murder in the Philippines where the stated reason was "long standing grudge". I am sure a Filipino with a "long standing grudge" can figure out how to even the score and gain a few points too. One with a little political power can even the score probably quicker and more effectively than the average citizen.... this probably happens with all countries of the world. There are political people around Dumaguete that are not worth pissing off, ill regards of the un-fairness of the situation you are confronted with them.

Just ran into someone close to the victim, She said the German did not beat him but bit him on the arm. He spent 12 hours in jail and is facing a case against him now... There is more about the German that isn't correct for me to post based on what I was told.

I am not going to make a judgement on who is wrong in this situation. However if the alleged victim is a municipal Councillor do you think he will be biased against foreigners in his future decisions concerning foreigners? This foreigners actions may harm other foreigners coming with decisions to be made in front of this Councillor. Most Filipinos group all foreingers into one category, assuming that most white foreigners are Americans... Hey Joe. If foreigners feel any form of discrimination or harassment, we must realize that the Filipino's image of a foreigners is formed by each and every foreigner's actions, and attributed against every foreigner living in the area. Emotional control of our actions is necessary sometimes....
