That is what I love about here compared to Australia. To catch the local Bus Service I needed to walk about 1/2 a kilometer to the nearest Bus Stop and they are lucky to run once an hour. Here you can hail a Tricycle and go 25KM's for $10AUD whereas a Taxi in Australia costs around $20/25AUD to drive 5 minutes down the road. Sorry but IMHO I have never had it so good when it comes to Public Transport than living here! I just make it my choice to live outside of the City Limits here to avoid all of the hustle and bustle, and noise and pollution, and over crowding, and... Well I think I have it covered!

 

Many EasyRides, (Jeepneys but they call them EZ Rides in Dumaguete), start from the terminal in the back of Robinson's mall but then have a secondary start somewhere else.

For example, the Sibulan EZRide can be caught from the Robinson's Mall jeepney terminal and take you downtown where it will fill up near the market.


You will pay double fare if you go from the mall rather than from downtown. That means you will pay 16 pesos instead of 8 if you leave from the mall but there will seldom be anyone else riding with you as its quicker to take a trike to the market and then get on a jeep.

The advantage to me is I can get the front seat all the way home if I board at Robinson's and I just give him 20 pesos for the whole trip. And that's just one "EZY Ride" route.

 

One of the ones from Sibulan is 001 and that is considered 3 digits. Many of the ones from Sibulan and from Bacong are 3 digits starting with 0. I am surprised more members have not seen them around Duma. They are not nearly as common as the 4 digit ones but if you can catch a 3 digit trike headed for Sibulan then its still only 10 pesos for the ride. My gf and I caught one outside of Cangs and she chatted with one of the other passengers who said "don't give him more than 10 pesos per person or you will spoil him."

Its not such a great deal as you can catch a jeep for the same price in the same spot if they are not full (but they usually are). My guess is they take someone into the city and come back empty so 10 pesos is 10 pesos.

The ones to Bacong with 3 digits actually have a tricycle station set up near the market. Those with keen eyes will find them.

EDIT: We have also caught a 3 digit tricycle going from the Dumaguete market to Sibulan after 9 pm when the jeeps have stopped running. They charge 25 pesos a head for that trip though.

AHA. Thats another one. I also noticed, as I was driving around today, that the ones to Bacong have only 3 numbers. So that's Valencia, Bacong or Sibulan have 3 digits and their home town written on the board (sometimes in small print). All the ones with 4 digits seem to be Dumaguete City based and that is why you need to look at the numbers. Example: If you are in town and board a Sibulan based tricycle he will not charge as much to take you to Sibulan as a Dumaguete based tricycle. Well he will if you are not wise enough to know the difference but now we know.

 

Dustin, where did you read about the modernization law being targeted at not only jeepneys but also trikes?
I can only find references to jeepneys. And yes I am aware that many jeepney drivers see it as a "phase out plan", but it is really not. What the government wants to achieve is to replace the old jeepneys (anything older than 15 years), with more modern replacements.



The reason many drivers object vehimently is that the replacement would see the jeepney owner go into between 1.2 and 1.6 million debt, financed with a 7 year loan at 6% interest. Such a loan would require monthly payments around the 22,000 PhP mark. I reckon the average current jeepney would be lucky to earn 600 a day after fuel and maintenance, or 18,000 a month. So if my guess is correct, jeepney fares would need to rise dramatically, even if the new models can take more passengers.
And here's the catch, if that happens the jeepneys will loose business to taxis and trikes.

As with everything subject to government regulation in this country, things will only get underway if the rules are actually implemented. While I agree that things will get moving in the provinces a lot slower than in the NCR, the law says absolutely nothing about different objectives for different regions.

 

I very much sympathise with you Brian; I find it a struggle to get inside just because of my height. I avoid jeepneys unless I can see a seat next to the exit but I think some of them are amazing vehicles. One day, as a project, I am going to photograph as many as possible. Yes, I know I am boring!

There is the Dumaguete to Siaton Terminal opposite Robinson's Mall also. (This covers the Dumaguete to Zamboanguita route but some only go as far as Zamboanguita so ask before boarding, AND: IF the Jeepney is full and you do not feel comfortable sitting in the aisle, walk 40/50M up the street and board the waiting Jeepney to gain a good seat (I like to sit right by the exit so I do not need to crawl over everyone with my broken leg)
