    If you go into the old siliman building which is a museum on boulavard they have a section on siquijor and all the folklore from there.

    When I lived in Liloan, Cebu, I heard that most filipinos were scared to go to the next barangay. Yet we foreigners went there all the time. It took me a long time to figure out that foreigners can go anywhere and are welcome but quite often filipinos were getting killed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

    Its a very clannish, gang type mentality in "some" places. Because we, foreigners, don't belong anywhere specific we tend to be welcomed everywhere. Not so for local people. I am taking a guess that this sort of behavior went on in Siquijor in the past and that would be the reason for the legends.

    We have our main balay in Siquijor which we have built over several years. And we spend about half our time in the Duma area. The Siquijidnons take their quackery very seriously. Even professional Filipinos tend to believe in it. I have noticed that many of their potions consist of ground up plants and barks and mixed with coconut oil. If your stomach feels nauseous you can rub one of those potions on your stomach and it really works, the nausea goes away. A relative here is a plant expert and he claims that there are a large number of curative plants on the island; I was with him once while he was searching. He is a special forces man, trained in the USA like a green beret, (who really hates weapons but can do deadly hand to hand after he relieves his opponent of his weapon) who had been in Marawi and who uses his talent for the benefit of troops in the field. I’m sure that there is some plant in the stomach reliever it that acts like a muscle relaxer. He pointed out one plant on the western side of the island that he called an “angels trumpet” whose flower looks just like a trumpet and which will put you to sleep in small doses, like an anesthetic, and kill you in larger doses. They have many medicines there that have worked over the ages. Then there is the black magic, the supernatural stuff that again, many educated Filipinos believe in. Well, if westerners (and Filipinos) can believe that a virgin became pregnant and stayed a virgin and her son turned water into wine and floated up into the sky, who is the least educated, especially when for all we know, all of this supernatural is true. Many of us believe that the Catholic doctrine is true, including me. In Siquijor, some of it is obvious trickery and totally fake but not all. That’s all I can say having been over there regularly since 1988. I always tell them that I think only the chemical potions work, some of the time, and when they work, they work well. But some of their potions are also poisonous as opposed to supernatural.

    In another thread there a topic about trouble in connection with the election, it could be about these problems SpringYellow was worried. I was in Siquijor last week, a perfect place for relaxation. Nice beaches, no hassle with traffic, even the witches was friendly lol. I will not have any problems visit there, neither with the witches or election trouble, but best hear from people with feet on the ground if you are the nervous type

    Sorry norm ive just got back from there but took the roro as took bike. Passenger was p120 each way to siquijor but with bike was p580.
    Roro was 8.30,10am,2pm and 6pm. 1.5 hr sailing time.
    Would deff go back there also just for some peace and quiet. The difference is unreal between here and there.

    I was on Siquijor. There is absolutely nothing to scare on that island. Great is that it is a quite quiet island. There are many (nice) resorts for vacations. I can recommend the Diamonds de Siquijor in Siquijor Town or the Kalachuchi in Larena next to Enrique Villanueva.

    There is a travel agency on Perdicios just south of silliman ave on the left side, a couple meters beyond ok fabrics with a whole bunch of scheds on the wall, seems up to date. The only TRUE schedule is probably at the booths at the pier. And yes, Filipinos seem unable to say "i don't know," but that's part of the charm when you learn to live with it. The first thing you get used to is "out of stock," if you can't deal with that, you won't last....
