Your chances of getting robbed while shopping here are almost nonexistent. The weapons are largely uncalled for in most parts of the Philippines. I have traveled alone to many regions of the Philippines and I can't recall one instance where a weapon or having a buddy would have made the slightest bit of difference.

There are areas in Manila and Mindanao that I would not travel to but the vast majority of the country is safe if you have the slightest bit of common sense.

You really shouldn't ever shoot a firearm in a crowded area unless your life is in eminent danger. Having stuff stolen is not a reason to shoot someone IMO. Even if you have great aim many times bullets do no stop when they hit a person. They can go straight through your target and hit someone/something you didn't intend on hitting. The only reason a gun should be fired is if your (or someone else's) life is being put in danger through some type of criminal action that has the intentions on taking a life.

Personally I think this is all way out of proportion to the type of problems we get. I have been here many many years and never had any problems that are being discussed here.

And why are we talking about 10K? If you wave around 100 pesos and walk away from it, then it won't last long.

Oppertunist Thefts I would say Happens every where.

Sorry but reading on and between the lines these are two Incidents just waiting to happen and were avoidable in my mind., No thought to security, will breed this sort of thing. How many times have we Heard/said don't leave things unattended and lock your doors, people see when you don't think about things.

I think by maintaining situational awareness you are creating a 'safe zone' around you. Pickpockets, like any petty criminal, are usually opportunist looking for or taking advantage of the 'easy score'. Don't put a target on your back and you are much less likely to be targeted.

That a foreigner is carrying around 10 - 20k of cash makes sense because the ATM's charge 200 pesos to withdraw money and many foreigners don't have any other options setup. They pull out their daily limit from the ATM and live on that until it runs out. If that foreigner lives in Valencia, then going home to drop off the money after the ATM trip is a pain in the @ss.

A foreigner at a *disco* bar at 2am? What is to be expected when your out late at bars likely hunting for a chick for the night. He also had 10k in cash on him and was probably flashing it. Enough to get whatever drinks, pay for a bit more expensive girl, and a hotel for the night.

Foreigners with tons of high end valuables in their house stolen. That sounds more like an inside job where someone knew exactly what they had and probably likely knew where it was as well along with knowing when the owners would be out and for how long.

Sounds like all preventable thefts that could have been avoided by being a bit smarter and more careful.

I believe the term "alien" was in use for foreign visitors long before the sci-fi genre got a hold of it.
