You bring up an excellent point, Wrye. Whoever is reading this that owns a firearm PLEASE be a responsible gun owner and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE to ensure you are able to hit your intended target -- and not cause collateral damage!

Dumaguete has a good firing range in Sibulan. Unfortunately, you are not going to be able to shoot there during the COMELEC gun ban, but after the gun ban ends please practice as necessary to maintain your proficiency.

I believe one of the reasons bad guys often seem to be unable to kill their intended target(s) -- I recall there were 8 shootings here in a single week about a month ago and "only" one person died -- is because the bad guys do not go to the gun range and practice with their (likely) illegal guns. When you go to the gun range you must sign their log book and annotate the serial number of your firearm so only legal gun owners can shoot there. Plus you must join the gun club or be escorted by a member, which keeps the criminals out. I believe a legal gun owner who is proficient has a big advantage over a bad guy who is not proficient.

Personally I think this is all way out of proportion to the type of problems we get. I have been here many many years and never had any problems that are being discussed here.

You really shouldn't ever shoot a firearm in a crowded area unless your life is in eminent danger. Having stuff stolen is not a reason to shoot someone IMO. Even if you have great aim many times bullets do no stop when they hit a person. They can go straight through your target and hit someone/something you didn't intend on hitting. The only reason a gun should be fired is if your (or someone else's) life is being put in danger through some type of criminal action that has the intentions on taking a life.

I completely agree with you, Wrye. I only advocate using lethal force when life is in imminent danger.

To reduce potential collateral damage (e.g., a bullet passing through the target and hitting someone behind) I recommend hollow-point bullets, which are designed to NOT pass through the target. Hollow point bullets cost almost P100 each so it's unlikely criminals use them, but responsible gun owners should use hollow-point rounds.

That is true if you are using a foreign credit or ATM card. If you are using a local bank card you are allowed to withdraw P20,000 per day. At least from BPI!

Back when the exchange rate on CDN $ was better and I had more money :banghead: I used to take out up to 20,000 pesos a day on my Canadian ATM card at certain BPI machines (not all would do it) and up to 40,000 pesos a day on my RCBC card at their ATM (2 transactions of 20,000 each) it would not surprise me to find out I could still do that but I no longer have that kind of money to foolishly withdraw and spend.

Yes, but I believe that has changed at all local banks due to the crime problem maybe??? Either way the BPI banks have it posted that foreign credit/ATM cards are limited to P10,000 per transaction. Don't know totals for the day though as in can you do more than 1 transaction per day???. I'll try to take photo next time I go to use the ATM (if I remember).
