They have been happening ever since I moved to Dumaguete almost 10 years ago. The shootings have increased...but so have the number of expats. When more opportunities present themselves and/or more Filipino-Expat interactions take place the more people will act on those opportunities, more thin skin will be damaged and/or conflicts in property/business dealings will take place.
When you move to an area where your financial situation is much better (or at least perceived to be much better) than the locals, along with major cultural differences, you are going to have these types of altercations. It is just human nature. Desperate people will resort to desperate measures. You must be aware of your surroundings at all times and take the proper precautions to protect yourself. Don't let that "city of gentle people" or "Filipinos are good people" nonsense fool you. There are sh*t human beings in every country and culture, the Philippines being no exception. Don't become complacent, everyone is a potential criminal that could end your life. (At least that's how I go about my daily life. Everyone I don't know, and many that I do, along with their actions are looked at with a reasonable amount of suspicion.)

I was there recently and met the German owner (didn't get his name) but he seemed like a very charming, friendly guy who was serious about building a good business for the long term. We spoke for only about half an hour but my impression was that he was the quiet and conscientious type as he talked about the improvements he was making and had planned for the bar. He said he had a restaurant in the food court at Robinsons and was looking to improve the food offering at Gie-Gies.
I am very sorry to hear of yet another casualty to violence in the City of Gentle People.- Like x 9

I assume, you are both right, @Rye83 and @dr ski.
Defensive living for sure is advisable here, but if you think about it every minute chances are you get paranoid.
Live is worth nothing here. We should not forget that. Living in a third world country doesn't mean laying on the beach and drinking chilled beer all the time.
You have to find your own way to enjoy your life here. Be cautious, be carefully, live under the radar and be aware where you are living. But don't forget to celebrate and enjoy. Otherwise you really get crazy.- Agree x 5

It isn't fear, it's just common sense. And chances are you do it most of the time and don't even realize it. Defensive driving...that's continuously preparing for the worst possible outcome, there is no room for optimism there. I just take it further and apply it to crowds and interpersonal interactions and relationships.- Agree x 3

Why can't we all just get along?
But all joking aside, it's a sad situation when everyone here lives their lives and makes their decisions based on fear rather than hope. There's a thin line between caution and paranoia.- Like x 3

Furthermore, there are many crimes and murders here. So much so that the readership of the local press loses interest in most of them. The press thoroughly covers the investigations into the murder of important social figures like politicians and the radio station host. There is enough of this to satisfy the appetite of the readership.
What is important to a few foreigners in not important to the Filipino readership here. Not much gets reported about investigations into the murder of foreigners.
This does not mean that the murders go unsolved by the police. Only that the results do not get reported. Especially here on DI. The posters here on DI do not follow up and communicate with the police department. Sometimes there will be a post on FB.- Like x 2

Filipino's are viewed as good, kind, etc because they know how to put on a good show. They are quite plastic in nature from my own interactions and observations.
Do NOT offend them, even in a joking way. Don't interfere with their livelihood, and DO NOT mess with their significant other. That's worked for me.. so far- Agree x 2
