I know what you mean. Built our first home 11 years ago, wood framed on concrete columns - still OK but showing its age. Next one will be built into the side of a hill facing down the valley, but still finalising best materials. No need to rush here. Take your time, source good materials and supervise it personally every step of the way - then you only have yourself to blame if the outcome is not to the standard you expected. Don't be afraid to fire a crew (and hire new) for not doing as instructed - they do learn and eventually respect you for it. Just speaking from experience.
