Have you been to the hospital yet? Do you like to go on trips outside of Dumaguete? Do you have any hobbies? Do you owe real estate taxes, register lots of vehicles, purchase private health insurance? do you run AIRCON? How many units, do your AIRCON the whole house or just some room at a 500 php hotel? What is your electric bill? fill up an SUV? do you like to go out to eat, do you entertain? I will agree that for 3K per day, I would be no problem if you do nothing but drinking breakfast, lunch and dinner at flip-flops, ynot honeycomb or all of the above, not that I have any particular problems with that. Each to his own.

He asked me a question in a challenging way and I answered. If you think it is condescending, I say that there is no excuse for your shaming someone for having the nerve to tell the truth, it is not dirt cheap here, to say it takes $100 per day to live the same life here as you do in the West. It is true. Gone grocery shopping lately? Sorry...more condescension. It is condescending to Filipinos to say you can live here dirt cheap on $800 a month with 2 maids. We are in the Philippines, not Somalia or Botswana.

Agree here as well. You cannot live a western lifestyle anywhere for cheaper than in the west. Which is also why I agreed with your statement about to each their own.

Because, if you came to PI looking to not change anything about how you lived in the West, expecting to live pennies on the dollar, you really got what you deserved.

Due diligence must be performed, and realistic expectations must be instilled in your psyche if you want to immigrate anywhere.

Good luck getting your Filipina wife to return to the Philippines if she is really happy where she is now. I have Filipina sisters in law who moved to the US from the Philippines in the 70's and have never once had a desire to move back, or visit for that matter. It is my observation that once most Filipina's move to other countries, they do not wish to return to the Philippines permanently. I won't say they are all that way, as I know of some who have returned.

Exactly. Not everyone came here to live cheaply. Some of us came because we promised our wives we would retire here, where she has family and friends and familiar culture and we thought it was a great idea because there is some truth in the statement “It’s more fun in the Philippines” and we love the people.

Some ex-Filipinos want to come here later on after they have worked hard in the West and they have saved up money and established pensions or 401ks in preparation and have no money worries. This is not a good place to be without a regular income but it is great as long as you have worked and saved the money. I know, more condescension.

Correct. I know some who have gone back, and some who haven't even visited as well. Usually, the one's who come here when they are younger, want to stay, and not even visit. Those who come here later in age.. late 20's and beyond, have either gone back, or have plans to go back to retire.

This is all anecdotal so your miles may vary
