A Great Cup of Coffee in the Philippines

Thanks! I think I will have to pass on going up there for now as I don't have a 4WD vehicle. I will check out the market though. We go there at least once a week for fresh meat, fish, veggies, etc... (also go to Valencia for fresh veg and fruit). Will keep an eye out for the Cocoa. I love a good homemade hot cocoa especially when not from some prepacked large scale manufacturer (Nestle etc). I prefer to make my own from fresh ground cacao and muscovato sugar and fresh goats milk. Sounds weird maybe, but tastes heavenly good IMHO!

 

I have a very small subcompact vehicle 2wd with 800cc engine (and manual trans) great for tooling around Dumaguete or any city with traffic and parking problems but not one for mountain climbing.

Off topic I went to Yan Yan and they had a multitude of different cocoa powders in varying sizes for anyone interested (like I am). I will start by getting a couple the smaller bags and testing if good for hot cocoa with them.

 

thanks to your coffee posts, brian, the little woman recently scored some green coffee beans at the Tanjay public market they were grown in upper Pamplona. they're small beans, maybe robusta but, from what i read, the flavor and caffeine aren't characteristic of robusta.

we've never roasted coffee before but we roast peanuts and cacao in a steel wok so we have some experience pan roasting and this morning we took 50 grams of beans to the 2nd crack, cooled the beans down, did a press and it was well worth it.

i would appreciate a heads up if anyone finds beans more local to duma, especially arabica beans..

 

Your very welcome, I roast robusta, it tastes just fine. The taste can vary quite a bit depending on roast time and one thing I have noticed is that a 2 to 4 day wait before you grind gives you a better taste with some coffee beans. Enjoy your roasting... Check some of the local coffee shops in your area, they may have some unroasted arabica beans that they will part with...

 

I haven't entered the ring for drying my own beans YET but i recently started grinding my own store bought beans and so far I have been very pleased with the Starbucks brand. Now to qualify my expertise or lack thereof, I am a black coffee drinker/no sugar and I really enjoy a good cup bold coffee. I do not drink dunkin donuts coffee or starbucks retail coffee and I almost exclusively make my own each and every day.I am unsure if I could make it thru my day without coffee after giving up smoking. So where would one go for a great cup of coffee in Dumaguete or Valencia area? I seem to remember a spanish restaurant near the food net that had good coffee and another place was san rival . Looking forward to coffee with the crew when I get there in September!

 

There is half decent coffee in a lot of places but I don't find anyplace that is better than regular old MacDonalds coffee. I forgot what good coffee was like until I was in Alabang at IHOP and OMG it was good.

sorry this was happening a couple of weeks back but... there's a sidewalk vender across the road from the duma fruit market (BDO side of the road) that has(d) green coffee beans at 120kg. the beans look to ungraded (mill run) but are considerably cleaner than the beans we got from the tanjay market.

disclaimer: the little woman made the purchase and provided the vender directions and she couldn't give intelligible instructionss for turning on a light so you're on your own.

 

I have just found good coffee at Abby's, P30 a cup.
