Agri areas being eaten up by massive urbanization

    Dumaguete's agricultural areas are slowly being eaten up by massive urbanization as a result of a booming economy in the city.

    City agriculturist and concurrent administrator, William Ablong, said the approval of the Comprehensive Land Use Plan of the city is pending review before the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

    Ablong said he want to establish a boundary between the rural and urban areas of the city so the remaining agricultural areas can be preserved for self sufficiency in food production.

    In 1977, the agricultural area in Dumaguete had the highest percentage at 75 percent, but it was drastically reduced to 29 percent in 2001, with only 1,233 hectares remaining of the total land area of more than 3,511 hectares.
