1. IMHO, Lockdowns hurt economies, people don't make money if people don't have money to spend, or unless the government gives it to you.
2. Short lockdowns work if people follow rules. Unless the Philippine government is lying and hiding tens of thousands of bodies, the early Negros lockdown worked (sorta) and we've had less than a couple hundred active cases at any one time since March 14 last year. Looks to me like we have 95% mask compliance in all the places i go, even now. I don't know anyone that got sick.
3. Opening up HELPS economies, only saves them if people get quickly re-employed. Dumaguete opened slightly in April last year, opened more in May. We are better off, not great.
4. Opening up WITHOUT knocking out huge clusters of the illness first is fatal to people and economies, like the US. Those people are lunatics, i've been back a couple times in the last half decade, not for two years, may never go back if they never wise up.
5. Noticed the new relax of travel restrictions here. Let it happen, wait 3 or 4 weeks, try something else, like "shields" not required, only 30% compliance now, not sure how a shield works if it's sitting over ur hair.
6. I have ZERO proof of ANYTHING above, but then i have the in-ter-net and i can find PROOF of ANYTHING. ( i was going to say "and you know, the CIA killed Kennedy," but some idiot would hijack the thread with proof. Take it to a new thread)

QUOTE FROM A WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) OFFICIAL:
“Look what’s happened to small-holder farmers all over the world... Look what’s happening to poverty levels. It seems that we may well have a doubling of world poverty by next year. We may well have at least a doubling of child malnutrition.”

The article went on to say the reduction in flu cases might be attributed to people wearing masks and social distancing.
It all sounded reasonable to me.-

Taiwan - 673, USA - 92.9, Canada - 4, Russia - 8.82, China - 178....now take a look at the following link to assist visualisation. The link refers to Taiwan but can be changed for any country

What this does show is that countries that fared worst are those that chose to lock down later and the subsequent mismanagement of the pandemic - those that acted early (even with high population densities) fared better.
Yes I agree deaths are an unfortunate consequence of this virus and should be minimised - and one of the management tools is lockdown whilst another is restricted movement pre- or post.
The Philippines has chosen to remove internal travel restrictions without actually having done anything since the initial lockdown last year - we are now only just beginning to see the effect.-

I lived and worked in China from 2012 to 2014, i lived in Nantong which had the Yangtze run through it and was described as a "medium" sized city of 8,000,000 population.
Every day you could see the smog over the city and some days the air tasted like gas, the Yangtze was definitely a no swim zone.
The city itself was a concrete jungle but the roads were impressive, multi lane highways running all through the city, this did cause a problem if you were on foot and had to cross the road, one night after a death defying struggle to cross a main road i was just congratulating myself on reaching the other side alive when i was nearly sideswiped by a passing e bike, it seems that it was allowed to drive these things on the pavement, most people did not switch on the lights as it wasted the battery and the fact that these things were almost silent did not help.-
