it seems to be the norm here for many doctors to diagnose any respirastory problem as "asthma". my wife was treated for years for 'asthma" by a local doc. when we marreid I took her in for her monthly "prescription", which turned out to be robutussin. getting her out of the stinky city it all cleared up, she never had asthma, she has alergies!

    Dr. Rosales at Holy Child.

Sometimes asthma is caused by allergies. I believe they should do some allergy skin tests to see if that is really the cause.....but prescribing dextromethorphan, a first generation over-the-counter antihistamine that makes you drowsy, seems pretty laughable (and irresponsible) to me.

I am writing this reply because I want to share something that I think is completely asinine. I had asthma as a kid and remember when they came out with Primatene Mist. For years when I would have an attack, yes sometimes, or maybe every time, triggered by allergies, I had to endure all the "home remedies" for asthma as there was really no relief. I have a few residual problems but mostly outgrew the asthma. Because of this thread I looked up Primatene Mist and discovered that it was the only over the counter relief for asthmatics but was taken off the market December 31, because it uses CFC's as the propellant and could harm the environment. I guess the government figures this is a "win win" situation. If Primatene Mist is off the market CFC's won't harm the ozone and if the asthmatic cannot breathe well he/she will leave more oxygen for the rest of us. Another victory for science.

Of course I cannot answer that, but before reading further I will jump in and say he is surely seeing doctor that was not smart enough to get out of this country and work where the pay and living conditions are better. That puts him in the bottom half of the class. Yes there are exceptions, but I would not count on having found one.

Curious what you thought pulmonologists do. (I had no clue.)
