Be careful mate. If they fail once they could have a go again. There are usually more than one , they work as a group so listen carefully too, they sometimes use what sound like bird cries to communicate between each other as well. Strange I know but it's true.

You are never without a risk anywhere unfortunately. We have some Belgian Malinois as well as other dogs, the Belgians are big dogs and quite intimidating.

Not everyone are dog lovers as we are, but our dogs do spend hours at night patrolling around our house; a chained dog that barks is worthless in my opinion on protecting your home and family.

We were some of the first folks to build a home in this area, there have been many more over the years. The area has not been immune to raids for drugs and such so the wife put in a number of cameras around our place.

Funny as she said some neighbors did not like the fact we were installing cameras that also pointed outside of our home and others were happy that someone had a bit of an eye on things.

In my opinion, most thieves or would be thieves are lazy on what they want to target...a Belgian Malinois is a tremendous deterrent.

Obviously my opinion but for those who have met my big boy...I know he will protect my family when I'm not home.

We found a very good camera system that is being sold at Polaris. The system comes with up to 8 cameras with night vision and the sales rep will install at a very low (in my opinion) cost. I personally would recommend a wired system due to previous experience with wireless systems being kind of flakey in performance. This system is called “Homeguard” and operates as a cloud based P2P so you can check online from anywhere without having to go through a DDNS to get to your home router, however that is available too. With this system you can also do motion detect alarms, automatic email and of course, continuous recording to a hardfile provided with the system and when monitoring you can take pictures of specific scenes. They also have individual Wireless IP cameras where you can add SD cards for recording plus voice. You can use the 2-way voice to to talk anybody you may see in the room. As long as your internet connection is running, the system is working. If internet is down, of course cloud services for remote viewing are down but it continues to record and of course your own local intranet still works at your home as long as your router is on. It works very well with your smartphone and also with your PC if your install smartphone OS emulator like Bluestacks.

Last night approximately 10 pm, heard an attempt to open sliding glass window in the rear my house. Waited a few moments and partially opened curtain panel. Saw a man walking away from the window. There’s security bars on all the window frames.

Please no comments that I probably deserved the attempted breakin or he was only checking the windows for security purposes.

PNP and numerous barangay men arrived very quickly. They made a search but the man was gone. I am very grateful for their prompt arrival and search.

This post is for those that are concerned about security awareness in the Dumaguete area. I do realize this happens everywhere in the world and is not limited to Negros Oriental.

If the OP doesn’t want this information posted please delete it.

I actually started taking notice of the Malinois when I was in the military as it seemed like they were starting to be the breed most used by the K-9 folks. When I worked in Afghanistan it seemed like they were the dog used most searching vehicles coming onto base.

We have 3 Belgian Malinois (and some pure breed pups that need to find their forever homes) as well as some other pure and mix breed dogs...yes, we are dog lovers. Folks will have their favorite breeds but I absolutely love the Belgian Malinois; their loyalty, intelligence and protective nature is tops in my opinion. I haven't retired yet so I am away quite a bit for work so I do feel better knowing I have some dogs that will protect our home and family.

We were planning on eventually putting cameras in and then the wife had some concerns as our area has expanded; normally something I would do myself as I have experience with security systems, but it was a concern and I was not home at the time. A bit pricy and not as clean of an install as I would have done, but the wife is happy to have them. Our system can handle 16 cameras and we currently have 10 so it is on my list to add some more and clean up the original installation...on my list.

I would recommend for anyone worried about break ins and such to consider a CCTV system and a dog or two patrolling their home.

Plus dogs bring so much to your family...I'm watching my pure breed Papillon in his play around the apartment here in Korea as I write this. A gift for my wife when I bring him home in a couple weeks.

You don't have to buy puppies----that can be expensive. Just adopt---there are quite many here that are just roaming around homeless. With proper attention, they will grow up loyal to you and will guard your house like crazy. Have around 3 of them.

Security cameras are fairly cheap to buy even a dummy camera would make a deterrent. And dogs also could scare away an intruder, things to consider!

Bad advice to give to a foreigner in the Philippines. It is illegal to own a firearm as a foreigner. You could get your significant other one...but if you check another thread here that could end up backfiring on you.

I have some Amazon Cloud cameras. They send phone notifications when they detect movement, a person, dogs barking (though it sometimes mistakes tokay barks for dogs) and babies crying, with all of those being options to toggle. It also has a speaker that allows me to talk through the camera, which has so far scared the sh*t out of anyone that wasn't expecting a voice in an empty house and has been helpful in directing and communicating with people in the house while I'm away.

They aren't cheap and come with a monthly subscription if you want to unlock all the features but I have found them to be worth the investment.

If you put them at the entrances and were home (or not) it would be a good way to inform the person trying to get in they are being watched and that they should p*ss off.
