Actually Bacolod is wonderful place. Very switched-on local government and things generally run well. The shopping is as good as Cebu now in my opinion. Whatever you want - you will likely find. There are a great many subdivisions in the area that offer very comfortable lifestyles and great security at reasonable prices. As good as Manila offers. Real estate prices would be comparable with Dumaguete though. Cost of living perhaps a little lower given the competition in Bacolod for your shopping dollar. Great infrastructure, internet is fast and reliable, electricity is very good (odd brownout - but if it happens it rarely lasts more than a few minutes), cable TV, etc..

Thanks for the website Rhoody! You had me until you mentioned the 'fabulous white sand beaches' LOL...where are they? I've been going to Bacolod for 30 years and I wouldn't bother with anything less than an hour from the city. A couple beaches in the general area of the city do have whitish sand - but the water is far from clear. Nothing to do but lay on the sand and wish for Sipalay. The rest of the website is pretty accurate though!

Bacolod is a genuine expat secret. Dumaguete has it's charms - and I can understand why a lot of foreignors are drawn there. But Bacolod is a very liveable gem. You can actually live there comfortably on a budget with pretty much the comforts of home. Have a look if you like. The new airport is probably the best provincial facility in the country.

    Thanks

Rhoody and garbonzo thank you so very much for your response. I really like Dumaguete but I worry that the population is to small for my business plans. As I don't have a regular retirement just my personal plan which is doing fine so far but you never know what could happen. So I have to do business when I come back home to Philippines. When I first came to the Philippines it was just to look at doing business there, But a unexpected thing happened I fell in love with a Filipina my life was never the same again but I am happily married she means the world to me. However the added worries sometimes feel a little overwhelming. What ever I do has to work. After living in the Philippines for five years I really don't look at the Philippines as if I a wearing rose colored glasses anymore. I see the Philippines for what it is but I still see the same thing so many possibilities, all of us do.

Old thread but I'm going to be moving near Bacolod in a couple of years so if anyone is from there, or has any questions about the area, let me know!

I have never been there but have read very mixed reviews (as a place to live) - garbonzo, Dec 24, 2008 here gives a wonderful review, but that was 10 years ago. What is your more recent opinion?

Yes that is quite an old review! But much of it remains true. Especially about the beaches. Water is gross, sand not much better.
It is definitely getting crowded however. Traffic is tolerable but again, getting worse. I don't stay in the City when I go visit, just about 15 kilometers outside near Mambukal Resort where my inlaws live. I don't see too many expats in Bacolod, and definitely not in the provinces so if you guys want a nice, low key area to retire, this might suit you! If anyone has any specific questions feel free to message me.

Unfortunately I go to Bacolod about once a month, since that is where the wife's family is and we have a house there. Traffic is horrendous, expansion is on-going quickly with no corresponding infrastructure to support a growing population.

We basically don't drive in the city, take taxi and hope to arrive at the destination in one piece.

If you don't play golf, it is pretty boring.

There are a few things that I guess one could say are nice. Costs of items are more expensive than here. Gas alone is usually 4 to 6 peso per liter higher.

For me the best part of visiting Bacolod is leaving and getting back to Dumaguete.
