Now that I have your attention......I am a beer drinker. I am sure that my brand will now be considered an import and the price will adjust accordingly....What are the best domestic brands and what is its price per 12 pack, case, etc.? I love sapporo, ichi-ban, asahi, Tsing Tao and Fosters. I am also pretty sure these are considered imports, what are their prices and availability? How hard is it to get ice for the cooler, not that I can't drink it hot? I dabble in home brewing, although I don't know how easy it would be to get my equipment shipped there or find the ingredients, are there strict regulations on me possibly selling my own brand there in my bar as there are tax ramifications here in the states. Did I mention I LOVE BEER?

hmmm and I thought somehow you said you love beer... and than you talk about sapporo, ichi-ban, asahi, Tsing Tao and Fosters ??? now i am really confused...

As long I have local SMB I would not touch one of those you mentioned... or I take one of the 20+ imported beers from a country where no mais, corn or chemicals are needed and allowed ... hehe

to brew your own beer is not a problem, I know a guy in Manila with a micro brewery who makes 4 kinds, also available here in Duma

but I guess its just me

I knew it wouldn't take you long. Beer is in the eye of the beerholder. I can't understand how my dad drinks some of the French crap he does. He gave me some one time and Sunday's here are dry so I took a couple of sips and poured the rest down the drain. I know, alcohol abuse. I told him about it and said I took it out of the fridge..."YOU PUT IT IN THE FRIDGE?!?!?!?!?". I can't imagine what it would taste like at room temp. I saw you mention SMB on some other threads...look forward to it, how about price?

its about the only local beer without strange stuff in it... depending on the public location between 25 and 50 Peso per bottle. some places with real ice-cold beer, size 0.323 l (SML is 0.33l and average 5 Peso more... but has strange stuff in it) same alcohol (that is has more is a wrong statement by many) but less calories ...

SMB is also available as draft 0.5 l goes for 50 Peso, so less than a dollar

Beer is cheap here. There are only two major brewers: San Miguel and Asia Brewery. I haven't inquired here in DGT but I know in Cebu City the distributors will deliver to residential houses just as they do businesses. San Miguel beer is approximately P12 ($.25) per 12-ounce bottle (330mL). I am sure there is some sort of minimum order from the distributor. The price of their Light beer is a little higher...I may be off slightly on these prices, I know several members here can answer precisely ;-)

Asia Brewery produces "Beer na Beer" and it's light beer is "Lone Star Light" under license from a Texas brewer. They also offer Colt 45 as a malt option under license. Their prices are cheaper across the board but far less popular than San Miguel.

If you are buying from a grocery or sari-sari store, the prices will be probably double the distributor price, but most locals don't buy 12-ounce bottles, they buy "Grandes" which are 1 liter. San Miguel's retail price on those is now P54 ($1.10)...not sure on the other brands.

In a bar or restaurant in Dumaguete, SMB is typically P25 to P45 depending on the establishment and time of day. San Mig Light typically carries a P5 premium. Asia Brewery products, if available, are maybe P5 less. (By the way, prices in larger cities like Cebu and Manila are higher than DGT.)

Since you are a beer guy, you might like to know that San Miguel also has a Premium beer offering, San Miguel Premium. It is packaged in a different bottle and with a label that looks like the San Miguel sold in Spain. I don't know the story behind it and I'm not a beer connoisseur, but it seems pretty good to me. The only place I have come across it locally was at Hayahay. Anybody else stocking it? Coyotes? BikeDave?

The imports you like may not be easy to find in DGT, but you can take a trip once a month or so to Cebu City and stock up. I would check the Duty Free stores in the new Northwing of SM City Cebu or the Duty Free at Waterfront Hotel in Lahug.

Regarding your home brew equipment, if you can break it down into a balikbayan box or two, I would try that. Most people don't have customs issues with balikbayan boxes. From GA, it might run you $120 per box.

I have no idea about the taxes on micro-brew sales...

    Good luck!

SMB terrible stuff. THe SMB light isn't bad, I'll have to try the SMB Premium I guess.

I've been told that SMB was the only beer preferred by GIs during the Vietnam War because it had formaldehyde in it? I wasn't choosy back then and drank everything that came my way while in country..

Seriously, those Chinese or Japanese beers mentioned can't be any worse can they?

haha, I would bite if I would not know who says that ... :p

BTW I have been told to avoid houses with red lights some 35 years ago...

... I am pretty happy that I did not believe all that crap I've been told and made my own experience, cause the beer in those houses is very expensive... but fun to drink...
