I would strongly suggest RENTING for at least a year, maybe 6 months if you've lived in PH for awhile.. Then you can decide for yourself. Everybody likes different places for different reasons and has different paranoias; gangs, terrorists, chickens, noisy ill-trained dogs, mountain girls, etc... Our paranoia is "global warming" and "king tides," like in Hawaii, so, after two years renting in town, we're moving to 380 meter altitude... Our other paranoia is how bad traffic will be downtown in 2 years (or tomorrow), so we're moving to the boonies (with well trained dogs). Our other paranoia is which municipality or barangay is the most corrupt and likely to try to extort you, so of course, we're moving to the worst... See what i mean, so, really, you won't get any useful answers on this thread for your own use.....

And Dustin, be nice, he's asking a real question.. Which reminds me.. Don't expect a straight answer, 90% of information is conjecture, lies, or old info, just like the states. And if "out of stock" bothers you, move to cebu or manila. I remember when a burger joint was "out of stock" of hamburger buns... <grin>

But the area is a fun place to live, medium sized town, lots of nice people, nice weather (global warming is forcing most big storms up thru Luzon), enough decent restaurants to keep you well fed (argued to death), and the town is so small that whomever you meet will be related, work with, is cousins with, or went to Silliman university with someone you already know, or they just moved here too...

Have you stayed in Dumaguete before for a decent period? Where have you stayed in the Philippines because if its like Cebu city or worse being Manila its a poor comparison. Depending where you lived before and enjoyed you might hate Dumaguete (or love it).

Now what are you looking for? What you want or can do w/o makes all the difference on what places to avoid. However DO stay away from anything within the flood zone of the river... don't be that fool! Anyways if you want good internet (as far as what is available) you need to be 300 meters from a major road PLDT has fiber on and make sure they have a slot available. If you want quiet that is NOT very close to a trafficked road (main road, major road, or shortcut road).... and watch out for all the animals like roosters, goats, etc etc. Do you want super close beach access because that tends to mean crap internet and double price as well for that trade off. Do you want to be close to decent places to eat or are you happy eating at home and barely go out?

We can't really say what you'd like. I know guys I think are nuts for what they like and they think I'm nuts for what I like. Depends which kind of nut you are.

Your choices here depend on your budget, lifestyle, hobbies, sexual preferences. There is a wide range of foreigner and local wealth here, Some foreigners make the adjustments (and there are many) while others complain until they had enough and leave. Good luck.

I like it because where I live feels like I'm in the countryside. All I can see from my front and rear windows are palm trees, fields and the occasional cow. Apart from the occasional motorbike, all I can hear are birds singing and the odd cockerel, cow or goat, and the cicadas in the evening. I can watch the sunrise from my rear balcony and the sunset behind Mount Talinis from my front balcony.

Yet within 5 minutes I can be in Dumaguete city, supermarket, mall etc. 5 Mins the other way and I'm in Valencia and it's attractions.

The only downside is no decent bar within walking distance, but I guess one can't have everything.

Mark: The other thing to watch out for is the human animal noise makers, dance bars, noisy neighbors... Our street shut down one expat with a "karaoke till 2 am" addiction with the new 10 pm law (with the help of the barangay captain), but you might wander down around midnight on sat night to sit for awhile before making a final decision. But you probably already know that...

I moved 3 months ago from Calindagan to Junob (not far from the road Duaguete-Valencia) and i like the place; some fresh air, quiete and still close to downtown, Hypermart Lee plaza and Robinson Mall

Because of lack of demand in Bacong while the Valencia customer base significantly increasing, the Bacong ladyboy population has transferred to Valencia. The good looking young ladies in Bacong are all taken. Valencia has many and they don’t carry ID’s so no worries. Police in Valencia are foreigner friendly and enjoy talking with drunk foreigners. So easy choice for newcomers or frustrated or lonely guys, move to Valencia, no comparison.

    Thank you Edward

I've already spent over three years in The Philippines so I don't think I'll have any problems "adjusting".

Guess I'll just explore and see what happens

    Good day to you all.

I wouldn't even risk taking the drive up the mountain. I heard there has been a gang of ladyboy bike bandits roaming around Valencia lately that will yank you off your bike and have their way with you before making their get-away. Just a heads up.

I would stick with Bacong, Dumaguete or Sibulan. I hear they all have gangs of beautiful ladies that go around door to door giving free BJ's.
