Some areas are slow specially outside the city because not all cellsite are upgraded to 3G / Hsdpa signal, the internet signal still feeds to the older way to go unto the net "GPRS" which is slower.

Here's some tip that could help to boast the signal using usb hub modems: try to buy a wire for usb hub 4-5 meters and put the usb modem at the tip on it while the other tip is connected to your laptop or desktop and put the usb modem on the higher ground outside your house to get a good signal. For me it works!

Hi KelpGuy..thanks for the tip off!..I went to the Check Inn and it seems they are using PLDT and they do have a good connection. When I was there last year they didn't have the best connection but things have changed.

I took my laptop in today and there was a very healthy connection speed with 24hr back up generator. I will be staying there tomorrow night for a few weeks. i tried my unlocked USB modem at Robinsons Mall with Smart sim and also Sun without much success so Check Inn is my best option it seems.

good to hear the check-inn will work for you
i stayed there in april and may a year ago and they had wifi *and* cable but maybe you didn't see the cable wrapped up and stuffed behind the tv : ) the wifi worked good in the lounging area near the stairway but it was useless in my room at the end of the hall.

can you explain, ''i tried my unlocked USB modem at Robinsons Mall with Smart sim and also Sun without much success."

    thanks...
    norm : ))~

Hi I tried the Check Inn at same time last year and it wasn't real good but the connection within room was certainly very good. For some reason the LAN wasn't working for me yesterday and I used the wifi which was good.

"i tried my unlocked USB modem at Robinsons Mall with Smart sim and also Sun without much success."

By the above I meant that I have a wireless USB modem that I had unlocked. This allows you to use any sim card (Sun, Smart and Globe) and it cost me 1000PHP in Manila - I have a USB modem that I brought from Australia which is why it cost a bit more than usual.

It connected to both Smart and Sun at Robinsons when I plugged it into my laptop but I couldn't bring up a single page - personally I think these devices arent really worth looking at unless you are fairly sure you will be using it in an area which has a strong signal especially here in Dumaguete or if you can implement one of the tricks outlined earlier in earlier responses to post.
