I had a nasty surprise today at the Bureau of Immigration.
I went to get my visa extended, and asked for a 6 months extension, which would be beyond my 3 year stay limit, but in view of the new "regulatory relief for foreigners" I figured it wouldn't be a problem.
Aside from being told that I can only apply for the "courtesy" extension near my 3 year limit, so I couldn't get 6 months now (not a big deal), I was also told that the privilege to extend beyond 3 years would involve a payment of a 25,000 peso extra fee, aside from a fine and the regular extension fees. Moreover, such a courtesy extension can only be given for 4 months, after which the foreigner needs to pay the 25,000 peso courtesy fee again.
So, if at all feasible without a bunch of forced hotel quarantines, I reckon I will pass on the courtesy and travel somewhere for a few days anyway.
Not amused here, and unimpressed with the "courtesy" extended.

I am not sure they know the words 'courtesy', 'reciprocity', 'service', 'encouragement' (i.e. for aliens to come to their country - they could do with the cash) or any of those words which relate to a country acknowledging they are part of a global system which works best when they show compassion and decency (two more words to add) to each other. They do know 'officialdom', 'scapegoating', 'self-promoting' and a few other things I can't be bothered to think of just now!
