    Hi!
I'm not a regular user of this forum, so please forgive me if this question has just been discussed.

I have a girlfriend in Negros Oriental, who I want to marry and bring her to the UK. She is illegitimate and her father died years ago. She currently uses his surname and her mother's surname as her middle name, which seems correct.

She claims that it would be impossible to get a birth certificate for herself using this name.

Would it be difficult for her to get a birth cert. in her own name? I'm worried about this, because there are enough stories about ladies with husbands, who change their names, rather than annull thier marriages, to start their 'new' lives.

your advice will be most welcome!

Andy, I'm sure somebody will answer the Birth Cert question
However you sound uncertain about the lady, How long have you known her,
do you doubt her explaination? Contact her nearest relatives or neighbours to confirm her story.
If she has not had a birth certificate since birth she can go to the National Statistic's office and register for a late registration, that's the only way she will obtain one.
.Good luck and don't rush things..JB

She should be able to get a BC in SOME name, whether or not it is the name she wants to use is the question, and WHY.

If you have questions in your relationship, Pointman Cebu - Do you have questions or concerns about your Filipina being a scammer?

You cannot necessarily count on a girl's family and neighbors to verify things about her.

My first experience here in 1999, they all knew she was lying to me, but no one clued me in..

Sounds like it could be a difficult process. First step would be at local , barangay level, to get barangay clearance. Presumably she has a home barangay somewhere where people could verify who she is and who her parents were. Then to N.S.O for birth cert and certificate of no impediment. There is no guarantee that she would get a UK visa even if you manage to meet all the requirements and get married here. British Embassy visa section are very strict these days , mainly because of abuse in the past.

Andy, you're right to be concerned.

In fairness to the lady in question, she might be telling the truth, but you have already heard alarm bells ringing. I suggest you mark time for a while and do as many background checks as possible, using other agencies if necessary. She will need a birth certificate to obtain a passport (although in this country I am sure there is a way around that), and her application for a visa would be automatically rejected if one can't be produced. The comment by Barkada above is spot on. Even if she meets all the requirements and has all the documents, there is no guarantee that the British Embassy will grant a visa. The system has been far too widely abused in the past and is now being tightened up. So many of the Utopian dreams end in very expensive tears. The prime target countries of U.S., Canada, Oz, and U.K. are awash with situations where the guy brought the girl over, only for her to disappear within hours of getting there. All of these guys had also heard all of the horror stories, but of course they knew that it could never happen to them because "my girl is different from all the others". Yeah, right.

Of course, this isn't to say that it always happens, and there are lots of examples of where everyone is very happy and things all work out very well. I certainly hope, for your sake, that you also fall into that category, but until you have the cast-iron evidence and proof, you could be skating on very thin ice.

Good luck with your endeavours, I hope it works out for you.

    Roger

Sorry! I didn't realise that I had so many replies!

Thank you all for your help.

I've known the girl for 2 1/2 years, but these stories about how hard it is for her to obtain a birth certificate have set alarm bells ringing. I appreciate that most paperwork is rather more complicated in the Phils than here in the UK. Certainly late registration in the correct name seems to be the way forward, but I shall be very cautious.

    Thanks again!
